Mercedes GP nog altijd op zoek naar derde coureur voor 2011

Mercedes Grand Prix is van plan om nog een test- en reservecoureur te contracteren voor komend seizoen. Het team kwam vorig jaar na enkele Grands Prix onder derde rijder te zitten nadat Nick Heidfeld overstapte naar Pirelli en later bij Sauber races ging rijden.

Volgens Mercedes' motorsportbaas Norbert Haug is een derde coureur, ondanks het testverbod, nog altijd erg waardevol voor een team. "Je kan veel ontwikkelingswerk in de simulator verrichten. Het echte testen op de circuits is gelimiteerd, dus kan je tegenwoordig beter spreken van een reservecoureur. Je moet iemand hebben die in de auto kan springen en meteen competitief kan zijn."

Haug ontkende verder dat ze in gesprek zijn geweest met Nico Hülkenberg voor deze positie binnen het team. "We zijn in contact met enkele rijders en hebben we een idee van wie onze reservecoureur word, maar we hebben geen contact met Nico Hülkenberg hierover. Ondanks dat hij zeker over het juiste talent beschikt zijn we niet met hem in gesprek. Hij heeft het vorig jaar goed gedaan, maar is nu verbonden aan Force India", aldus Haug.
