Gisteren meldden we al dat een aantal coureurs vinden dat de FIA een DRS-zone moet plaatsen in de 130R bocht op Suzuka, om zo het inhalen te bevorderen en Max Verstappen schaart zich nu ook bij dat groepje. Hij vraagt zich echter af of het gaat gebeuren.

"Charlie Whiting moet de beslissingen nemen. Als inhalen dit jaar moeilijk blijkt te zijn, dan overwegen ze wellicht om volgend jaar DRS in de 130R in te voeren. Maar dan zijn de auto's weer veranderd en wil je het risico misschien niet meer nemen, als je ziet wat er hier in het verleden is gebeurd", zegt Verstappen tegenover Motorsport.

In 2014 maakte Jules Bianchi op Suzuka een zware crash mee toen hij, in natte condities, met zijn auto onder een takelwagen terechtkwam. De Fransman overleefde de klap wonderwel, maar stierf later alsnog aan zijn verwondingen.

    Ik zie het gebruik van drs en het ongeluk van paar jaar terug niet in verband. Dat erover gesproken moet worden geeft blijkbaar aan dat de f1 op een dood spoor zit op het moment wat betreft het racen dicht bij elkaar.

      Het gaat er niet om dat dit een direct verband heeft, na het ongeluk met Bianchi kan een Suzuka niet nog een dodelijk ongeluk gebruiken. Dat speelt mee in afwegingen die met veiligheid te maken hebben.
      En dicht bij elkaar racen is al jaren een probleem, om het nu een dood spoor te noemen heeft niks met de situatie te maken. Heeft met de ontwikkeling van de auto's te maken waardoor dit ontstaat.

    Beetje stom om het incident met Bianchi hierbij te betrekken. Zo'n freak accident kan praktisch overal gebeuren, en heeft helemaal niks te maken of ze al dan niet DRS willen toelaten in de 130R. Ik vind het trouwens een slecht idee qua veiligheid, niet voor de top 3 teams. Easy peasy voor hen om met vleugeltje open de R130 door te scheuren, voor de overige teams eerder onverantwoord.

    Even kijken of ik de redenatie kan volgen. Omwege iemand die tijdens gele vlag situatie crashde, is het gevaarlijk DRS te gebruiken in 130r in race situatie...
