Valtteri Bottas werd in Japan voor de tweede keer in 8 dagen tweede. De Mercedes-coureur moest teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton voor zich dulden op Suzuka.

Heel makkelijk kwam de tweede plek niet voor Bottas, want de Fin had op het eind van de race last van blaren op zijn banden. Daardoor moest hij nog flink zijn best doen om Max Verstappen voor te blijven. “Aanvankelijk voelde alles goed tijdens de race. Ik wist wat ik moest doen, dus ik voerde gewoon het plan uit. De snelheid voelde goed, maar aan het eind van de tweede stint had ik wat blaren op mijn banden. Dat maakte het lastiger, maar mijn opdracht was om als tweede de finish te bereiken.”

Hamilton had vroeg in de race wat problemen met zijn motor. Bottas had daar geen last van. De drievoudig Grand Prix-winnaar had, behalve de blaren op zijn banden, geen zaken die hem dwars zaten. “Er waren geen problemen. We waren in staat om de motor een beetje te sparen omdat onze snelheid zo goed was.”

    Zijn taak als wingman prima gedaan ja. Racer Hamilton op 1, rondjesrijder Bottas op 2, racer Verstappen op 3.

      Hij hoefde niks te doen, ze draaide gewoon de kraan wat verder open. De mercedes motor heeft vandaag niet eens 1 keer de DRS open gehad.

      Eigenlijk is het schandalig dat zo'n middelmatige coureur in zo'n geweldige auto mag rijden. Genoeg coureurs die heel wat beter zijn en het verdienen, kijk bijvoorbeeld maar eens naar Ocon die zelfs ook bij hun onder contract zit...

    Was ook totaal geen dreiging.

    Naast wingman bottas was er ook een nog een tank RedBull waarbij het rood werd op het moment dat er een Ferrari naast zat.

    Hamilton had helemaal geen problemen met zijn motor. Hij roept maar wat, zo vaak, en dan is hij gewoon het snelst op de baan.
