Huub Rothengatter viert vandaag zijn 64e verjaardag

Oud-manager van Jos Verstappen en 26-voudig Grand Prix-coureur Huub Rothengatter is jarig. De, in Bussum geboren, landgenoot blaast vandaag 64 kaarsjes uit.

Rothengatter begon zijn loopbaan op de karts en had diverse baantjes om het racen te kunnen onderhouden. Keer op keer kreeg hij geld toegestopt door mensen als Ben Pon. Uiteindelijk kwam hij in 1977 in het Duitse Formule 3-kampioenschap terecht. In 1978 reed hij als teamgenoot van Jan Lammers en Arie Luyendyk voor het Racing Team Holland. Een team dat hedendaags nog steeds gebruikt wordt, hetzij in een andere samenstelling.

In 1979, 1980 en 1981 vervolgde hij zijn loopbaan in de Formule 2. Een overwinning op Zolder in 1980 was een bekroning op een goede periode van Rothengatter, die met grote regelmaat punten scoorde in zijn Toleman TG280-Hart. Hij eindigde het kampioenschap in 1980 op een zevende plaats. In 1981 reed hij enkele races voor het Lista Racing Team, voorzien van een March 802-chassis met BMW-motor. Een tweede plaats tussen de slangen en meren op Enna Pergusa bij zijn rentree, waren de enige punten die de Nederlander kon scoren.

Het duurde daarna bijna drie jaar voor Rothengatter zijn debuut in de Formule 1 kon maken. Door het wegvallen van Mauro Baldi, zocht Spirit een nieuwe coureur. Men kwam bij Rothengatter uit, die zich als 24e kon kwalificeren voor de Grand Prix van Canada. Uiteindelijk finishte de Nederlander op veertien ronden van de uiteindelijke winnaar Nelson Piquet. Rothengatter scoorde in totaal vijf top-10 plaatsen, wat hem volgens de huidige puntentelling zestien punten had opgeleverd.

Meer bekendheid in Nederland kreeg hij als manager van Jos Verstappen, nadat hij eerst als pr-medewerker voor Philips had gewerkt. Tussen 1991 en 2003 was hij de manager van de Nederlander en hij kreeg het voor elkaar om Jos Verstappen tussen 1994 en 2003, met weinig sponsoring, in de Formule 1 te krijgen en te houden. Rothengatter is tegenwoordig mede-eigenaar en directeur van EVBox. Een bedrijf dat zich bezighoudt met duurzame mobiliteit.

  Gezien de 7 felicitaties kan je gelijk hebben...mannetje heeft er wel voor gezorgd dat Jos behoorlijk heeft kunnen verdienen en daarmee ook Max heeft kunnen financieren. Had Jos na het Simtek avontuur in 1995 de f1 verlaten dan had het nu denk ik allemaal anders gelopen. Achteraf weten we het natuurlijk nooit. Maar zoals het nu gaat is mede te danken aan de bijzondere eigenschap om Jos Verstappen toch telkens weer aan de bak te krijgen voor een zitje. Mooi was ook het avontuur met gasten als Muermans, Perridon, Mol en die Wilux knakker. Geen idee of Huub daar nog tussen zat trouwens.

Misschien niet netjes en mogelijk zeer onterecht, maar ik heb altijd gedacht dat Jos een veel mooiere carriere had gehad als hij niet Rothengatter als manager had gehad.
