Teamorders Mercedes komen niet meer bij Wolff vandaan

Toto Wolff zal in de resterende races van het huidige seizoen niet zelf meer teamorders bij Mercedes uitvaardigen. Dat besluit is genomen na een fout van de teambaas tijdens de Russische Grand Prix.

Voor de teamorder in Rusland nam Wolff de verantwoordelijkheid op zich. Valtteri Bottas moest in die race aan de kant voor Lewis Hamilton, zodat laatstgenoemde in het kampioenschap meer kon uitlopen op Sebastian Vettel. Wolff brak tijdens de race in op de boordradio, waardoor Hamilton een ronde te laat de pits bezocht en een plek verloor aan Vettel. Hoofd-strategist James Vowles gaf daarom in Rusland de opdracht om niet over de boordradio te spreken.

Wolff lijkt de woorden van Vowles begrepen te hebben, want de Oostenrijker geeft hem de volledige controle. "Zodra we onderweg zijn in een kwalificatie of een race, dan neemt James de controle over. Alles wat ik dan nog kan doen, is hem voorzien van commentaren en hem feedback geven, maar uiteindelijk is het zijn beslissing om iets te doen. Hij heeft de controle op die momenten, hoewel ik een hogere functie heb binnen het team. Ik zal me er niet mee bemoeien, want het is uiteindelijk zijn beslissing. In Brackley hebben we een ondersteuningsruimte waar alle knappe koppen zitten."

Met andere woorden 'ik zeg wat er moet gebeuren, jij geeft het door en jij bent verantwoordelijk...'! Hij lijkt verdorie wel een Oostenrijker.

  Als je het technisch bekijkt heeft Wolff de strategie ondermijnt.
  Waarom een strateeg aanstellen als je hem zijn werk niet laat doen?

Ik ben niet tegen teamorders, maar vindt het laf zodra je kritiek krijgt om er dan je handen van af te trekken.

  In werkelijkheid zet Wolff zijn hoofdstrateeg buitenspel.
  Wolff heeft de eindverantwoordelijkheid, maar is geen strateeg.
  Verder is Wolff teambaas, maar geen teameigenaar.

Ik vind Wolff wel echt 1 van de betere teambazen. Laat wel zien een teamplayer te zijn en vertrouwen te hebben in zijn strategisten

het hele artikel op aut ospo rt waar dit stukje uit geknipt is trouwens erg interessant. Het laat iig goed het onderscheid zien tussen Mercedes en Ferrari dit jaar. Nadat Mercedes de race verloor in België had de leiding net als Arrivabene in Japan terug kunnen vallen op publiekelijk kritiek uiten of naar "schuldigen" zoeken voor de mislukking, maar hij probeerde het team juist te inspireren door naar oplossingen te zoeken ipv te gaan schelden. Dat lijkt goed te hebben gewerkt. Zijn voorbeeld over een vliegtuigcrash om zijn beslissing kracht bij is wat cru maar spot on.

  In het artikel probeert hij zijn beslissing te rechtvaardigen, maar besluit om toch zich niet meer te mengen met de strategie.
  Indien hij zich afzijdig gehouden had was er niet alweer een dispuut geweest.
