Grosjean: "Interlagos een speciale plek met veel historie"

Volgende week staat de Grand Prix van Brazilië op het programma. In het thuisland van wijlen Ayrton Senna hoopt Romain Grosjean voor Haas F1 Team een mooi resultaat neer te zetten in de jacht op de vierde positie bij de constructeurs.

Na een race op 2200 meter hoogte in Mexico wordt er in Brazilië weer op hoogte gereden. Het Autodromo José Carlos Pace ligt op 800 meter hoogte en is daardoor na Mexico de race op de grootste hoogte. Dat is volgens Grosjean een van de uitdagingen aan het circuit.

"Het is een redelijk lastig circuit met weinig kansen om uit te rusten. Zelfs op de rechte stukken kan je niet zoveel rusten als je wil. Ook zit je nog op een hoogte van 800 meter. Dat is niets vergeleken met Mexico, maar het is niet op zeeniveau. Het weer kan ook uitdagend zijn. Het kan erg warm en vochtig zijn. Het is een intense uitdaging, maar uiteindelijk is dat waar we naar zoeken."

Sao Paulo was de thuisstad van Senna en dat roept bij Grosjean natuurlijk herinneringen op aan de overleden grootheid. "Brazilië is altijd bijzonder door Ayrton Senna. Hij was een van de grootste namen in de Formule 1 en Interlagos is een speciale plek. Er is daar zoveel historie en op de dag van de race krijg je veel steun van de fans. Ik herinner me dat Ayrton in 1991 won en dat hij zijn trofee niet in de lucht kon houden, omdat zijn armen zo vermoeid waren van het rijden."

  Uitdagend circuit met goede bochten combinaties. De hoogte verschillen maken het overzichtelijk voor het publiek. Speciaal omdat tegen de klok in wordt gereden (hoewel er daarvan tegenwoordig meer zijn).

  Ik vind het dan weer helemaal geen uitdagend circuit. Weinig technische bochten, de vangrail is ver weg, de curbstones zijn heel vlak.
  
  Wel is het een circuit waar vaak veel actie plaatsvindt vanwege de 2 lange rechten stukken, degelijke remzones en een aanval zowel aan de binnenkant als aan de buitenkant van bocht 1 geplaatst kan worden.
  
  Ondanks dat er in het middengedeelte historisch aardig wat downforce nodig is zijn de rechte stukken de laatste jaren van steeds groter belang geworden op de rondetijd. Mercedes en Ferrari zullen hier dan ook enorm in het voordeel zijn.
