Verstappen na prima vrijdag: "Normaal gesproken staan we hier vijfde en zesde"

Max Verstappen zat er prima bij op de vrijdag voor de Grand Prix van Brazilië met P1 in VT1 en de vijfde tijd in de tweede training. De Red Bull-coureur was na afloop van de trainingen tevreden over het werk dat hij en het team in de simulator gedaan hebben.

In gesprek met Ziggo Sport verklaarde Verstappen dat hij bij Red Bull een hele dag in de simulator spendeert om de auto al af te stellen, voordat er een meter op het circuit gereden is. Over de simulator van Red Bull is de Nederlander dan ook erg tevreden. "Ik denk dat onze simulator heel goed is. Er zijn bijna geen andere Formule 1-teams die hun auto al op de simulator kunnen afstellen. Bij ons loopt dat heel goed, vooral in de tweede helft van het seizoen hebben we dat echt onder controle gekregen. Dat helpt gewoon. Als we op de simulator een goede balans vinden dan stap je op het circuit in en merk je dat je die voorsprong hebt.”

Verstappen had het ritme vroeg in de eerste training al te pakken en daarbij werd hij dus geholpen door de set-up uit de simulator. “Door mijn ervaring door de jaren heen voelt een eerste rondje al niet meer zo. Je kent het circuit en weet waar je moet remmen. Een nieuw circuit ken ik gewoonlijk in zo’n vijf rondjes. Hier in Brazilië heb ik er al genoeg gedaan, dus het enige waar je in de eerste paar ronden stappen maakt, is het gevoel van de hoeveelheid downforce en waar je moet remmen of de auto moet laten rollen.”

Ondanks het goede tempo van de vrijdag verwacht Verstappen niet om pole position mee te kunnen strijden in Sao Paulo. “Dan moeten we in de kwalificatie 3,5 tienden voor liggen voor we de laatste sector ingaan. Normaal gesproken staan wij als team vijfde en zesde op de grid hier. Dat is realistisch, maar je weet het nooit. Als er iemand een foutje maakt, moeten wij erbij zitten om ervoor te staan.”

  @Taures Max geeft aan dat hem dat niet intresseert, mij intresseert het wel en ik hoop dat hij boven hun eindigd, maar het zal lastig worden. Wellicht dat het bepaald gaat worden door de banden strategy.

Max toont met deze uitspraken zijn volwassenenheid weer. Hij lijkt toch echt geleerd te hebben van zijn fouten begin dit jaar. Hij beseft nu dat het nodig is om wanneer je niet voor de winst of pole kan gaan, om toch zo hoog mogelijk te eindigen. Dit is een gedachte die Max eerder niet leek te hebben, toen was het de eerste plaats of niks.
Verstappen is echt (weer) gegroeid dit jaar:)

  Zijn ongeduld qua rijstijl van voor Monaco dit jaar heeft volgens mij niks te maken met wat er hier verteld wordt.. Dat goed voorbereiden, sim werk en realistisch inschatten waar hij staat t.o.v. de rest heeft hij altijd al gedaan..

dat laatste stuk nekt ze. Maar in decrace kan dat juist een voordeel worden als ze 5/6 starten. Want in de middensector kunnen ze dan dichterbij komen om vervolgens met DRS het laatste stuk op te gaan.

  Dat betwijfel ik toch. DRS wordt pas na 2 rondes geactiveerd. Dan kunnen de eerste vier al een dusdanig groot gat hebben getrokken dat DRS niet gebruikt kan worden.
  
  Daarbij de gridstraf van RIC waardoor hij waarschijnlijk vanaf P10 of 11 moet starten. Verstappen mag het dus allemaal in zijn eentje doen.

Het verschil wat RBR in sector 2 kan maken is heel groot, zeker als je kijkt hoe kort dit rondje is. Dus ik zie nog wel mogelijkheden om voor Bottas en/of Raikkonen te komen.
