Lauda neemt videoboodschap op: "Ik ben er snel weer bij"

Voor het eerst sinds zijn longtransplantatie heeft Niki Lauda echt iets van zich laten horen. Mercedes publiceerde op haar sociale media een videoboodschap van de drievoudig wereldkampioen.

Lauda onderging in juli zijn longtransplantatie en werkte sindsdien hard aan zijn herstel. Er waren geruchten dat hij in Abu Dhabi terug zou keren in de paddock, maar de Oostenrijker besloot thuis te blijven om verder aan te sterken. Wel had hij dus een videoboodschap voor Mercedes en zijn fans. "Dit is een bericht voor het team en mijn fans. Zoals jullie allemaal weten heb ik een lastige tijd gehad wat betreft mijn gezondheid en de steun die ik van iedereen gekregen heb, was ongelooflijk. Ik was al snel uit bed, omdat ik mij thuisvoelde tussen grote familie van vrienden."

Lauda was in de korte video ook lovend over Mercedes, dat in 2018 voor de vijfde keer op rij beide wereldtitels binnenhaalde. "De prestatie van dit jaar was buitengewoon. We hadden het niet beter kunnen doen met vijf wereldtitels op rij, Lewis die weer wint en Valtteri die er goed bij zit. Het belangrijkste bericht is dat ik er snel weer bij ben en dan gaan we er weer voor, voor de zesde keer."
