Hamilton over startnummer 1: "Vind het persoonlijk helemaal niks"

Lewis Hamilton reed vrijdag tijdens de eerste vrije training in Abu Dhabi met het startnummer 1 op de neus van zijn Mercedes. Een beeld dat we in de toekomst niet vaak zullen zien, want de Brit heeft helemaal niks met het nummer.

Al sinds jaar en dag is het startnummer 1 in de Formule 1 gereserveerd voor de kampioen. Sinds de coureurs een vast startnummer gekozen hebben in 2014, heeft het startnummer 1 alleen nog op de auto van Sebastian Vettel geprijkt in 2014. In de jaren daarna koos Lewis Hamilton ervoor om zijn startnummer 44 te behouden, terwijl Nico Rosberg na het behalen van zijn wereldtitel stopte.

Ook in 2019 hoeven we niet te verwachten dat Hamilton met startnummer 1 gaat rijden. Wel wilde hij in Abu Dhabi de eerste vrije training met het getal rijden. "Persoonlijk vind ik het helemaal niks. Het was maar voor een sessie, dus het betekent niet echt iets. De reden waarom ik het deed, is omdat ik hier al zes jaar ben en we nooit het nummer 1 op de auto gehad hebben sinds we kampioen geworden zijn. Ik dacht dus dat dit wel cool was", vertelde hij aan PlanetF1.

Volgens Hamilton is het vooral een bedankje richting de engineers en monteurs van Mercedes. "Ik herinner me dat de engineers en monteurs me vroegen of ik ooit met nummer 1 zou gaan rijden. Ik dacht dat het tof zou zijn om het voor een sessie op de auto te hebben, zodat ze op zijn minst een foto hebben waar ze erg trots op kunnen zijn, omdat we de nummer 1 waren. 44 is mijn geluksnummer. Iedereen in het team zegt ook dat ze een bus met nummer 44 of een stoel met nummer 44 zien of krijgen als ze reizen. Het wordt onderdeel van hun leven en dat is mooi, want zo is het ook voor mij."

Zelf ben ik geen voorstander van vaste startnummers. Ik vond het juist wel wat hebben dat de nummers 1 t/m max. 6 waren voorbehouden aan de beste teams van het vorige seizoen en dat de coureur met het oneven nummer moet worden geacht de betere/oudere coureur te zijn.

Zie Ferrari in de Kimi/Felipe-tijd:

2007: FM: 5, KR: 6 (Massa had toen reeds een jaar voor Ferrari gereden)
2008: KR: 1, FM: 2 (Kimi WDC)
2009: FM: 3, FM: 4 (Felipe Vice-WDC)

Maar ik snap dat een vast nummer marketingtechnisch interessanter is.

  Stel dat Ric na 2019 stopt, blijft nummer #3 geloof ik nog tot 2 - 3 jaar voorbehouden aan Ric mocht hij ooit terugkomen. Daarna vervalt het recht en zou het eventueel kunnen lijkt me?
