Vettel genoot van kwalificatie: "Mercedes had nog wat over voor laatste run"

De derde startpositie is niet helemaal waar Sebastian Vettel op hoopte voor de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi. Desondanks heeft de viervoudig wereldkampioen wel genoten van de kwalificatiesessie.

Vettel verloor in Mexico al de kans op zijn vijfde wereldtitel en Ferrari deed dat in Brazilië bij de constructeurs. Toch wil de Duitser het seizoen op een positieve manier afsluiten en bij voorkeur was hij daarmee begonnen door pole position te pakken. Dat lukte niet, want de Mercedessen bleken op het Yas Marina Circuit sterker dan hem. Het verschil met polesitter Lewis Hamilton was uiteindelijk ruim drie tienden van een seconde.

“Ik heb genoten van deze sessie", vertelde Vettel. "In Q1 dacht ik dat het heel krap was en dacht ik dat we een woordje mee konden spreken. In Q2 reed Lewis een erg sterke ronde op de hardere band, waardoor ik dacht dat het moeilijk zou worden. Mijn eerste run in Q3 was vervolgens erg goed en toen zat het weer dicht bij elkaar, maar ze moeten nog wat over hebben gehad in de laatste run. Ik verbeterde me wel, maar niet genoeg om een bedreiging te zijn. Voor morgen heb ik er vertrouwen in. Het wordt een lange race, maar het wordt waarschijnlijk wel een leuke.”

Vettel ging na de kwalificatie rustig een praatje houden met Hamilton en de Duitser ziet geen reden voor animositeit tussen beiden. “Op het circuit kan wel eens wat gebeuren, maar ik zie geen reden waarom je niet met elkaar zou kunnen praten of grappen kan maken. Ik heb ervan genoten. Het viel niet mijn kant op, want dan had ik er nog meer van genoten. Ik kijk ernaar uit om morgen voor de laatste keer in de auto te stappen en deze gasten uit te dagen.”

Ach, Laatste race dus Mercedes gooide hem even vol open. Valt niks tegen te beginnen.
Zeer mooie pole van Hamilton maar ook hier had hij weer voordeel. Ik denk dat ze zelfs nog sneller hadden gekund. Ze lijken met heel veel downforce te rijden omdat ze anders 7 kleuren ...... voor de RB. Maar die motor is zo sterk dat ze zich dat kunnen veroorloven.
