Vettel: "Pakte tijd terug, maar Lewis controleerde vooraan de snelheid"

Sebastian Vettel was voorafgaand aan de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi al zeker van de tweede positie in het kampioenschap. De race op het Yas Marina Circuit eindigde hij ook die positie, net als in het kampioenschap achter Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel werd betrekkelijk eenvoudig tweede, maar was niet bij machte om een vuist te maken in de richting van Hamilton. “Hij is de kampioen en hij verdient het ook om dat te zijn. Het was een zwaar jaar. Ik heb tot aan de laatste ronde alles geprobeerd en dat geldt ook voor vandaag, dus daar heb ik van genoten."

"Ik pakte steeds wat tijd terug, maar volgens mij controleerde Lewis de snelheid", vervolgde Vettel voor de microfoon van David Coulthard. "Graag had ik meer echte wiel-aan-wiel-actie gehad. Het was een lang jaar met veel races. Het team en ik zullen allebei proberen sterker terug te komen, zodat we het Lewis lastiger kunnen maken volgend jaar."

Ook Vettel had nog wat woorden over voor Fernando Alonso. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen nam in Abu Dhabi afscheid van de Formule 1 met een elfde positie en Vettel denkt dat Alonso daarmee vier zware jaren heeft afgesloten. "Ten slotte wil ik ook Fernando feliciteren. De afgelopen jaren moeten erg zwaar voor hem geweest zijn en we gaan hem missen.

Ach kom op man. Ik geloofde ook lange tijd niet dat die motor van Mercedes zo veel sterker was maar dat kan ook de prullenbak in. Die motor is als ze hem even openschroeven gewoon heel sterk. Daarom vind ik ook Verstappen en Vettel hier ... [Lees verder]
