Alexander Albon zegt dat Red Bull Racing zijn enige kans op de Formule 1 was. De Thaise Brit werd in 2012 uit het juniorenprogramma van het team gegooid en dat zorgde er bijna voor dat hij stopte met racen.

"Het was om verschillende redenen erg zwaar voor me dat ik mijn plek verloor. Niet in de laatste plaats om mijn resultaten, maar het zorgde er wel voor dat ik harder ging werken." Daarnaast verdween de moeder van Albon in 2012 achter de tralies en werd eerder dit jaar vrijgelaten.

"Ik stond op het punt om te stappen met racen. Vanaf toen wist ik dat ik iedere keer indruk moest maken wanneer ik zou racen en gelukkig gaf Helmut Marko mij een tweede kans. Ik moest er in blijven geloven dat het kon gebeuren. Ik wist echter dat de kans niet groot zou zijn en het budget was er ook niet. Ik wist dat de enige kans op de Formule 1 bij Toro Rosso en Red Bull Racing zou zijn, maar zoals we allemaal weten is het niet makkelijk om indruk te maken op Helmut Marko", zegt hij tegenover RaceFans.

Op maandag na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi kreeg Albon te horen dat hij het zitje bij Toro Rosso kreeg. "Er werd me verteld dat ik bevestigd was als rijder van Toro Rosso en dat het team klaar was om het bekend te maken. Ik was toen net in het winkelcentrum en ging natuurlijk snel weer naar het hotel. Ik kan niet zeggen dat het als een verrassing kwam, omdat ik onder mijn Formule E-contract had proberen uit te komen, zodat ik bij Toro Rosso kon rijden. Ik kon niet geloven dat het echt ging gebeuren. Ik belde mijn moeder als eerste en zij vond het waarschijnlijk nog spannender dan ik."

Ik denk dat het voor Albon nog lastig wordt om onder het stempel "bij gebrek aan beter" uit te komen, er was immers weinig te kiezen qua talenten uit hun juniorenprogramma...zo weinig dat zelfs Kvyat weer een kans krijgt...
Maar goed Albon krijgt dus de kans en we zullen zien hoe hij het doet volgend jaar.
