Sainz voelt geen extra druk als kopman McLaren en enige Spanjaard

Het seizoen 2019 belooft een bijzondere te worden voor Carlos Sainz. Hij moet bij McLaren de kar gaan trekken naast nieuwkomer Lando Norris en is daarnaast de enige Spanjaard in de Formule 1 na het vertrek van Fernando Alonso.

Alonso laat de Formule 1 na 18 jaar achter zich en Sainz is de opvolger van zijn landgenoot bij McLaren. McLaren opereert met twee nieuwe coureurs, want debutant Norris vervangt Stoffel Vandoorne. Om vooruitgang te boeken zal het team grotendeels afhankelijk zijn van de ervaring van Sainz. Tevens zal heel Spanje haar succesverwachtingen nu op de schouders van Sainz laten rusten, maar dat vindt hij geen probleem.

"Eigenlijk is er op die manier geen extra druk", vertelde Sainz aan PlanetF1.com. "Vooral omdat je als coureur de verwachtingen van het publiek en je thuisland niet als druk ziet. Je vindt zoiets positief. Ik vind het geweldig dat iedereen in Spanje straks Formule 1 kijkt voor mij. Dat is iets waar ik naar uitkijk. Als je in de auto stapt, denk je daar niet meer aan. Dan telt alleen winnen. Ik wil ooit winnen in de Formule 1, maar daar hoeft men mij geen druk voor op te leggen. Ik ben namelijk degene die dat het liefste wil."

"Het voelt goed en ergens ook heel machtig", vervolgt Sainz over de leidende rol die hij bij McLaren kan gaan spelen. "Ik kom in mijn vijfde Formule 1-seizoen naar McLaren. Ik heb bij twee teams gereden, maar mijn kampioenschap in de Formule Renault 3.5 staat nog vers in mijn geheugen. Met dat vertrouwen en mijn ervaring ga ik het avontuur aan. Bij Renault en Toro Rosso heb ik twee extremen gezien op het gebied van de balans van een auto. Daardoor ga ik met veel kennis naar McLaren en ik wil daar ook de leiding nemen, zodat ik met het team de goede weg in kan slaan."

Sainz is een goede coureur. Geen absolute topper, maar wel degelijk goed. Het is zo'n jongen die in een auto die hem echt ligt hele mooie dingen kan doen, maar als de auto niet helemaal is wat hij nodig heeft kan hij maar moeilijk om de problemen heen rijden. Tuurlijk niet, die coureurs voelen NOOIT extra druk. Het lijkt wel alsof elk interview bij alle coureurs dezelfde reacties oplevert. Ze zeggen GVD allemaal hetzelfde, keer op keer.

Geen extra druk. Natuurlijk niet, ze vrijen hem al maanden op. Wacht maar tot de resultaten achterwege blijven.

Iedereen heeft de verwachtingen rond Sainz toch al een paar keer naar beneden bijgesteld en dan is er geen druk. Vanuit het team is er ook geen druk en hij wordt ook als kopman gezien, terwijl hij dat in feite niet heeft afgedwongen.

Het is zo'n jongen die in een auto die hem echt ligt hele mooie dingen kan doen, maar als de auto niet helemaal is wat hij nodig heeft kan hij maar moeilijk om de problemen heen rijden. Als McLaren een auto bouwt die hem ligt gaat het straks beter dan iedereen verwachtte, doen ze dat niet dan verzuipt ie er in.

  Fijn dat er ook mensen zijn die realistisch kunnen reageren.
  Sainz hoort absoluut in de F1 thuis. Geen absolute top maar wel prima subtop. Kan op (langere termijn) misschien zelfs af en toe verrassen in de McLaren.
