Alonso: "Ervaring LMP1 en Indy 500 hielp mij in duel met Vandoorne"

Fernando Alonso heeft de afgelopen twee seizoenen ervaring op gedaan in andere raceklassen. Die ervaring heeft hem in 2018 geholpen om teamgenoot Stoffel Vandoorne zoek te rijden in het kwalificatieduel, zo denkt de Spanjaard.

Sinds begin 2017 is Alonso druk met het rijden van extra races, buiten de kalender van de Formule 1 om. Hij nam al deel aan de Indy 500, de 24 uur van Daytona en inmiddels is hij ook een volledig WEC-programma aan het draaien. Tevens was Alonso gewoon nog Formule 1-coureur bij McLaren en in 2018 leverde hij daar een unieke prestatie af. In alle 21 kwalificaties was de tweevoudig wereldkampioen sneller dan teamgenoot Vandoorne.

Alonso denkt dat zijn ervaringen buiten de Formule 1 dat mogelijk hebben gemaakt. "Het is moeilijk te weten hoe snel je echt bent in een auto. Je kan alleen kijken naar de getallen en dit jaar was met afstand mijn beste wat betreft het kwalificatieduel. Ik heb dus het gevoel dat ik competitief en snel ben. Na het testen van een IndyCar en deelname aan het WEC voel ik me betere, completere coureur. Ik begrijp het gedrag van de auto's beter, maar ook de rijtechnieken, nieuwe manieren om energie en de banden te sparen."

"Je hebt meer informatie van buitenaf en van andere engineers, een andere blik op dingen en dat maakt je beter, of het geeft je in ieder geval een breder beeld van de autosport. Je hebt ook een andere mening als je in de Formule 1-auto stapt, ook al is die daar soms niet eens bruikbaar. De verschillende concepten en filosofieën helpen je volgens mij als coureur."

  Voor degenen die wel eens in een kart rijden. Als je wekelijks indoor kart rijdt dan kan je als je dat vaak genoeg gedaan hebt iedere ronde binnen een tiende van een seconde rijden. Ga je tussendoor een keer outdoor karten en kom je daarna terug naar dezelfde indoor baan dan zal je in het begin iedere bocht te vroeg insturen. Het duurt dan gewoon weer even om in het juiste ritme te komen.
  
  Natuurlijk is Alonso een veel betere coureur, maar ik snap de strekking van Alonso zijn verhaal ook niet. Dit klinkt meer als overal een positieve draai aan geven.
  
  Was het Norris niet die laatst een F1 training had afgewezen omdat hij juist op de F2 moest focussen en dat hij beweerde dat zijn vrije trainingen in de F1 hem niet hadden geholpen. (Weet niet zeker meer of dat nu Norris of Russell was)
  
  En als het echt zou helpen om binnen een seizoen in andere klassen te rijden dan zou het een heel stuk vaker gebeuren. Bij Alonso denk ik meer dat het met motivatie te maken had. Hij had niet zoveel interesse meer om in de F1 achteraan te rijden, dus die afwisseling zal voor hem wel goed geweest zijn.

Spijtig dat men van de enige electrische klasse niets spectaculair kan maken. De wagens acceleren trager dan een straat tesla . ze zouden zelf door de snelste kart klasse op een ronde of meer gezet worden. Geef die wagens toch meer vermogen,slicks en fatsoenlijke circuits. Als je zelf al het monaco circuit moet inkorten... Misschien ben ik mis maar denk toch echt dat met de huidige technologie je veel snellere wagens kan hebben dan wat er nu rond rijd...

  Het is nu al een poppenkast.. Als het niet wat vrijer wordt ,met veeel minder regeltjes, trekt het straks helemaal geen publieke belangstelling, een vereiste voor de levensvatbaarheid van die klasse...

Gezien waar McLaren in de ranglijst staat, denk ik dat het niet handig is dat teamgenoten met elkaar strijden maar dat ze elkaar moeten helpen om samen de auto te analyseren en helpen verbeteren.
