Overzicht: Coureurs en teams beoordeeld - Scuderia Toro Rosso

Lewis Hamilton werd in 2018 voor de vijfde keer wereldkampioen en daarmee kwam hij gelijk te staan met Juan Manuel Fangio en nog maar twee wereldtitels verwijderd van recordhouder Michael Schumacher. De winterstop is inmiddels alweer even aangebroken en daarom is het tijd om de coureurs en teams te beoordelen. De cijfers en beoordelingen zijn volledig subjectief en er valt dus over te discussiëren. We gaan verder met het team dat op de voorlaatste positie in het kampioenschap eindigde, Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Voor Scuderia Toro Rosso was het een apart seizoen. De vorige seizoenen was het Italiaanse zusterteam van Red Bull Racing een stabiele middenmotor, zo eindigde het team van 2015 tot en met 2017 iedere keer als zevende. Voor het begin van dit seizoen wist Toro Rosso dat het moeilijk zou worden om dat in 2018 weer voor elkaar te krijgen.

Toro Rosso stapte namelijk over naar de motoren van Honda en die stonden er bij McLaren nog niet bepaald bekend om dat ze veel power hadden. Red Bull Racing wilde graag weten hoe de Honda-motor het in de Toro Rosso zou doen, zodat zij naast Renault eventueel nog een andere optie hadden voor 2019.

Toro Rosso reed gedurende het jaar zodoende steeds meer in dienst van Red Bull Racing en daarom werden er veel gridstraffen gepakt, waardoor de Toro Rosso-coureurs meer dan eens achteraan moesten starten. Daardoor konden zij de werkelijke kracht van de auto weinig meer laten zien, maar het vertrek van James Key leek wel invloed te hebben op de kracht van het chassis, die niet zo sterk leek als de afgelopen jaren. Toro Rosso stond eerder juist vaak bekend om de sterkte van zijn chassis.

Pierre Gasly en Brendon Hartley waren dit jaar de coureurs van het team en de krachtsverhoudingen waren vanaf het begin vrij duidelijk. Gasly scoorde in de tweede race in Bahrein een vierde plek en zette zich daarmee meteen in de kijker van Red Bull Racing. Hij wist verder nog punten te scoren in Monaco, Hongarije, België en Mexico en eindigde het seizoen op 29 punten. Daarmee scoorde hij maar liefst 25 punten meer dan zijn teamgenoot Brendon Hartley.

De Nieuw-Zeelander leek richting het einde van het seizoen niet genoeg te kunnen verkondigen dat hij toch echt wel een stoeltje in de Formule 1 verdient, maar hij kwam dit seizoen maar tot vier punten, behaald in Azerbeidzjan, Duitsland en Amerika. Hartley reed richting het einde van het seizoen inderdaad wat beter, maar volgens ons was dat over het hele jaar bekeken niet genoeg om een voldoende te krijgen. Ook het kwalificatieduel was namelijk vrij duidelijk. Die werd met 15-6 ook ruim in het voordeel van Gasly beslecht.

100% eens, Hartley heeft het zelf verknalt en Gasly heeft een paar goude races laten zien.

  Hartley is natuurlijk ook met een andere insteek bij STR binnengehaald, immers eind 2017 was al bekend dat 2018 (en mogelijk 2019) veel testwerk voor Honda gedaan zou moeten worden. Op dat moment zet je het liefst een coureur in de auto die veel kan bijdragen in de ontwikkeling en niet zo zeer aan de puntenstand.
  
  Ik denk dat RBR en STR dat goed hebben gedaan en nu is het komend jaar eentje voor verdere ontwikkeling en racecraft (Kvyat) en ontwikkeling van jong talent (Albon). Dit duidt er voor mij op dat de oorspronkelijke doelstelling die eerst gepland waren voor 2018 en 2019 al in 2018 zijn behaald.

  Klopt helemaal. Daar hadden ze eerst twee jaar voor uitgetrokken,
  maar dat bleek niet meer nodig te zijn volgens Honda.

  En toch las ik een paar weken geleden ergens een bericht dat TR in 2019 ontwikkelingswerk blijft doen. Zowel betreffende de motor als aeropakket.

  F1 Benelux. Klopt, maar dat was voor er beslist werd dat RB volgend jaar ook overstapt. Daarna is TR alleen maar als test team bezig geweest en die P4 overboord gezet.
