In Memoriam: Ontwikkelaar van het HANS-Systeem, Robert Hubbard, overleden

De bedenker en ontwerper van het Head And Neck Support-systeem, Robert Hubbard, is overleden. Hubbard ontwikkelde het systeem in samenwerking met zijn zwager en voormalig IMSA-coureur Jim Downing.

Hoewel de introductie van het systeem lang duurde, kreeg Hubbard het toch voor elkaar dat het HANS-systeem in de autosport een verplichting werd. Hubbard was al lang voordat hij het HANS-systeem ontwikkelde betrokken bij de verkeersveiligheid. Hij promoveerde op de mechanische eigenschappen van de schedel tijdens zijn werk aan de Universiteit van Michigan. Deze universiteit is gespecialiseerd op het gebied van veiligheid voor automobilisten.

Het HANS-systeem werd geboren toen Downing en Hubbard zich realiseerden dat bestuurders bij race-ongevallen om het leven kwamen omdat hun hoofd niet in bedwang gehouden kon worden. Dit leidde tot schedelbreuken. Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd met beperkte middelen. Een kleine subsidie van de staat Michigan was het enige werkbare bedrag waarmee ze aan de slag konden.

Na enkele experimenten diende Hubbard in 1985 een patent in en in 1986 reed Downing met dit model de IMSA-race op Daytona.

De dood van Ayrton Senna en Roland Ratzenberger tijdens de Grand Prix van San Marino leidde tot een hernieuwde kijk op veiligheid. Professor Sid Watkins en de FIA namen daarna het HANS-systeem onder de loep. Het was Gerhard Berger die in 1995 op Fiorano voor het eerst met het systeem ging testen. Vanaf 2003 werd het HANS-systeem officieel goedgekeurd in de Formule 1. Hiervoor was het systeem al verplicht geworden bij IndyCar-races.

Het is onmogelijk om te weten hoeveel coureurs hun leven te danken hebben aan het werk van Hubbard. Ongetwijfeld zullen er nog meer volgen in de loop der jaren en alleen daarom al is het werk van Hubbard een goede, blijvende erfenis voor de autosport.

Kan me de introductie en vooral de verplichting van het systeem (in de F1) nog goed herinneren. Zelden zoveel scepsis bij de coureurs gezien. Maar HANS is achteraf natuurlijk een van de betere invoeringen in de autosport geweest.

De grootste tegenstander van het HANS-systeem in de Indycar is overleden ten gevolge van een crash en indien hij het systeem gedragen had, was het 99% zeker dat hij het ongeluk overleefd zou hebben. De ironie.

Ps. voor de mensen die denken "schedelbreuken? daar hebben ze toch een helm voor?", hiermee wordt bedoeld dat de schedel van de ruggengraat afbreekt door een plotselinge, zeer heftige deceleratie.

  Ik denk dat je Dale Earnhardt bedoelt, NASCAR coureur. Denk dat in die klasse de meeste tegenstand was, zelfs na zijn dood.

  In de tijd van de introductie van dit systeem, volgde ik de autorace-sport nog niet. Als ik het nu zie, lijkt me het een behoorlijke 'no-brainer' om het HANS-systeem te dragen als coureur.
  
  Ik ben dus wel benieuwd wat de reden was dat er zoveel weerstand tegen was. Is daar een vergelijk in te maken met de introductie van de HALO nu?

  Gordels in auto's invoer in 1975. Ook vreselijk veel weerstand. Mensen waren bang dat men gevangen zat in de gordels. HANS tegenstand ging ook over beperking vd bewegingsvrijheid en overdreven safety / risico's vh vak.

  @Roene: bewegingsvrijheid inderdaad. Ik heb nog nooit een HANS systeem gedragen maar wat ik ervan zie lijkt dat reuze mee te vallen. De halo is beperkender bij een crash waarbij de wagen ondersteboven ligt.
