Hülkenberg: "Podiumplaats mogelijk tijdens een gekke race"

Nico Hülkenberg bezit het twijfelachtige record voor meeste Grand Prix-starts zonder zege. De Duitser van Renault denkt echter dat daar in 2019 verandering in kan komen, maar dat moet dan wel gebeuren in een gekke race of als de omstandigheden gunstig zijn.

Dinsdag onthulde Renault de nieuwe R.S.19 tijdens een presentatie in de fabriek in het Franse Viry-Chatillon. Hülkenberg en Daniel Ricciardo, zijn nieuwe teamgenoot, waren bij de presentatie aanwezig. Renault hoopt in 2019 het gat naar de drie topteams te dichten. Hülkenberg geeft toe dat het onmogelijk te voorspellen is hoe goed de snelheid van Renault bij aanvang van het seizoen is, maar hij gelooft dat hij komend seizoen zijn eerste podiumplaats kan halen.

"Natuurlijk wil ik daar op een dag staan en daar werken we aan", vertelde de Duitser. "Ik werk er ook aan. Het is echter onmogelijk om te zeggen of het dit jaar gaat lukken en mogelijk gaat zijn. Als coureur ga je altijd voor het best mogelijke resultaat. Hopelijk kan het gebeuren als we dichter bij de top 3 zitten en er een gekke race is met gunstige omstandigheden. Ik denk dat we er vooral klaar voor moeten zijn als de kans zich voordoet."

Renault en Hülkenberg hopen 2019 op een betere positie af te sluiten dan 2018. Vorig seizoen werd het Franse team vierde bij de constructeurs, maar wel had het bijna 300 punten achterstand op Red Bull Racing. Hülkenberg werd met 69 punten zevende bij de coureurs, 101 punten achter nummer 6 Ricciardo.

ja ze zijn wel de favoriet denk ik als het een keer goed mis gaat voorin. Man wat zou ik het pijnlijk voor hem vinden als RIC hem dan wegkaapt. Maar ga er maar wel vanuit met die geluksvogel :p

Ja sorry dat ik het zeg, maar die gekke races zijn er al wel geweest. Maar als je hem dan de muur in rijdt zoals in Baku dan schiet je er niks mee op Nico.

In elke gekke race heeft iedereen een kans. Mega crash bij de start en er kunnen zomaar 13 rijders uitvallen. In 1998 spa: David Coulthard, Eddie Irvine, Alexander Wurz, Rubens Barrichello, Johnny Herbert, Olivier Panis, Jarno Trulli, Mika Salo, Pedro Diniz, Toranosuke Takagi, Ricardo Rosset, Shinji Nakano en Jos Verstappen.

Baku 2017 en 2018 waren van die races, maar hij hing hem daar 2 keer in de muur. Dat is wel een dingetje bij Nico, hij pakt de kansen niet.

  Zal ook aan de wagen hebben gelegen. Als hij daardoor op 100% moest rijden is een fout eerder gemaakt dan als je op 98% kan rijden.

Speculeren op een “gekke” race? Mm, zou toch liever horen dat hij (en Renault) op eigenkracht zo nu en dan voor een podiumplek mee kunnen (mee)strijden.... Wordt toch wel een keer tijd....
