Rob Smedley treedt toe tot het team van technische experts van Formula 1

Rob Smedley, onder andere bekend van zijn rol als ingenieur bij Williams en Ferrari, krijgt een adviserende rol binnen Formula 1. Smedley, die jarenlang heeft samengewerkt met ex-Ferrari en Williams-coureur Felipe Massa, kondigde vorig jaar aan de renstal uit Grove te verlaten. Desondanks wilde hij graag betrokken blijven bij de sport.

Formula 1 heeft inmiddels bevestigd dat hij 'deskundig consultant' zal worden om de technische kant van de sport beter te communiceren naar de kijker. Smedley zal daarom waarschijnlijk werken met het digitale platform van de sport, F1 TV. F1 TV zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid aanstaande maandagochtend haar 'launch' krijgen.

"Het gaat erom dat wij een duidelijke boodschap brengen naar de kijker," legde Smedley uit. "Wij zullen bespreken hoe bepaalde gebeurtenissen tot stand zijn gekomen, waarom mensen bepaalde beslissingen hebben genomen en hoe dit in zijn werk gegaan is. Dit gaan we op verschillende platformen doen om een beter verhaal van de Formule 1 te vertellen. Het gaat erom de innerlijke schoonheid van de Formule 1 naar de fans te brengen."

Smedley legde uit dat hij deze nieuwe uitdaging heeft aangenomen na een goed gesprek met Ross Brawn. Smedley en Brawn werkte in het verleden samen bij Ferrari. "In de gesprekken met Ross waren we allebei van mening dat er een grote mogelijkheid is om technische inhoud, technische gegevens en de manier waarop teams werken te delen met de fans. Nu hebben wij de kans om deze items op een bepaald niveau in elkaar te zetten," verklaarde Smedley.

"Ik heb nog steeds een enorme passie voor de Formule 1en ik hoop dat dit de manier is om de kijker uit te leggen wat ik de afgelopen twintig jaar als ingenieur in de Formule 1 heb geleerd. Het zal hierbij niet alleen om de technische kant gaan, maar ook om de menselijke kant. Ik wil namelijk uitleggen wat er voor nodig is om je leven te wijden aan de Formule 1," besloot hij.

  Ik heb geen idee. Maar als je bedoelt dat Rob Smedley een bobo is, dan zie ik dat toch echt anders. Dat is iemand met gedegen technische inhoud en een goed verhaal. En hij is een aardige en grappige vent.

  Bobo’s zijn toch mannetjes die in het bestuur van een sport zitten zonder dat ze zelf ooit iets hebben gepresteerd in die sport ?
  Lijkt me niet op te gaan voor Rob Smedley.

  Alles best leuk en aardig, ik wist even geen ander woord er voor dan bobo. Er ontstatt daar een clubje mensen die mogen doen en laten wat ze willen, geen druk van het runnen van een team, en met welk doel zo onderhand. Waar is de toegevoegde waarde voor de F1 fans vraag ik me zo onderhand af.
