Sergio Perez maakt zich zorgen over toekomst van Mexicaanse Grand Prix

Gisteren, na zijn tweede dag in de Racing Point-auto van 2019, kreeg Sergio Perez een aanval vragen betreffende de toekomst van de Mexicaanse Grand Prix. Wij konden gistermorgen melden dat de Mexicaanse regering van plan is om vele miljoenen in een nieuw aan te leggen spoorlijn wil steken. Dit zou ten koste kunnen gaan van de Mexicaanse Grand Prix.

Perez werd gisteren gevraagd naar zijn mening betreffende het voorstel van de regering om financiële steun in te trekken: "Ik zou het ontzettend jammer vinden. We hebben er met een heleboel mensen heel veel aan gedaan om de Grand Prix weer terug te krijgen in Mexico. Als de regering het geld terug zal trekken, betekent dat het einde van de Mexicaanse Grand Prix. Dat zou ontzettend jammer zijn. Ik ben in contact met de organisator. Als Mexicaan wil ik de wereld laten zien hoe mooi Mexico is. Formule 1 is het ideale platform om dat te tonen."

De Mexicaan weet niet of het mogelijk is om ergens financiële zekerheid te krijgen voor de Grand Prix. "Ik ga daar niet over, ik heb eerlijk gezegd ook geen idee. Ik ben daar niet verantwoordelijk voor. Ik vind het heel moeilijk omdat er heel veel voordelen aan de Grand Prix zitten." Volgens de Mexicaanse regering zitten er inderdaad voordelen aan de Mexicaanse Grand Prix, het land zou onder andere profiteren van het toerisme en de werkgelegenheid die het evenement met zich mee brengt.

Perez denkt dat het verdwijnen van de Grand Prix in zijn thuisland slecht is voor de opkomende Mexicaanse-coureurs: "Dat komt omdat er voor de Grand Prix, al 35 jaar lang, geen Mexicaanse coureur is doorgebroken op internationaal (Formule 1) autosport gebied. Als de Grand Prix wegvalt is er voor de jongere generatie ook niets meer om naar uit te kijken. Dat zou echt heel erg zonde zijn", besloot hij. Perez ging hier voorbij aan landgenoot Esteban Gutiérrez en doelde tijdens het interview op Hector Rebaque. Rebaque reed in 1981 tijdens de Ceasars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas zijn laatste Formule 1-race.
