Domenicali: "Niet het juiste moment voor VW Group om naar Formule 1 te komen"

De Formule 1 hoeft de komende jaren niet te rekenen op de entree van een merk uit de Volkswagen Group. Dat zegt Stefano Domenicali, die tegenwoordig de CEO is van Volkswagen-merk Lamborghini.

Tot en met 2015 was er regelmatig sprake van dat een van de merken van de Volkswagen Group, zoals Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche of Lamborghini, als motorleverancier toe zou treden in de Formule 1. Het dieselschandaal van dat jaar zette een dikke streep door die plannen. Tegenwoordig richt het Duitse concern zich meer en meer op elektrische autosport, getuige de deelname van Audi en de toekomstige deelname van Porsche aan de Formule E.

Tegen Gazetta dello Sport liet Domenicali weten dat het dieselschandaal ervoor zorgt dat de Formule 1 voorlopig niet in de plannen van de Volkswagen Group voorkomt. "Na alles wat er gebeurd is, heeft de Volkswagen Group besloten om te investeren in de Formule E. Hiermee wil het duidelijk maken dat het kijkt naar vooruitstrevende technologie. Natuurlijk zou ik graag terugkeren in de Formule 1, maar dit is daar niet het juiste moment voor."

Domenicali werkte tussen 1991 en 2014 bij Ferrari. De Italiaan was tussen 2008 en 2014 zelfs de teambaas van de Scuderia, maar onder zijn leiding werden er geen titels behaald. Gezien de wintertests van 2019 lijken dergelijke successen komend seizoen wel tot de mogelijkheden te behoren bij Ferrari, maar Domenicali wil zich niet aan een voorspelling wagen. "Ik wil niet meer zeggen dan dat ze aan een geweldig seizoen kunnen beginnen met een zeer competitieve auto."

Domenicali werd in 2014 als teambaas opgevolgd door Marco Mattiacci, die zijn positie al snel moest afstaan aan Maurizio Arrivabene. Arrivabene heeft inmiddels het veld moeten ruimen om plaats te maken voor Mattia Binotto. Over de voormalig technisch directeur wil Domenicali niet veel kwijt. "Het zou verkeerd zijn om te reageren op een bedrijf dat een stevige plek in mijn hart heeft. Ik kan Mattia alleen het beste wensen. Hij is een goede vriend en heeft terecht een goede reputatie verdiend de afgelopen jaren."

Iedere potentiële toetreder heeft met argusogen kunnen zien hoe moeilijk en vooral hoe kostbaar het is voor een fabrikant als Honda om competitief te worden.

Die kunnen veel goedkoper het braafste jongetje van de klas spelen in FE...

  Klopt. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat er buiten de VAG groep een ander merk is dat wel zou willen toetreden op dit moment. En dat heeft niet eens alleen met de motoren formule te maken maar ook vanwege de groene hype die je op het moment op werkelijk alle vlakken ziet.

Misschien wel het juiste moment voor Ferrari om er uit te stappen zeker nu ze dit jaar voor de zoveelste keer slaag krijgen van Mercedes en wellicht van het Japanse Honda torretje .

  Formule 1 is een winstgevende activiteit voor Ferrari. De gratis reclame en prestige voor het merk zijn alleen maar mooi meegenomen. Waarom dan stoppen? Dat zou idioot zijn.
