Racing Point verwacht updates bij elke Grand Prix in 2019

Force India zat in de eerste helft van 2018 vast in ontwikkelingsperspectief. Dit kwam door liquiditeitstekorten waardoor er geen nieuwe onderdelen geproduceerd en op de auto's geplaatst konden worden. Nu het team is omgevormd tot Racing Point en er miljoenen in het team zijn gestoken, richt het team zich op een volledig updateprogramma voor 2019.

Tijdens het eerste Formula 1 Season Launch-event in het centrum van Melbourne onthulde Racing Point-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer dat het extra geld dat voor 2019 beschikbaar is, het team zou moeten helpen om te vechten in het middenveld. Hij voorspelde ook dat het team de ontwikkeling in 2019 niet moet laten verslonzen.

"We hebben een beetje meer geld en dat zal ons helpen met de ontwikkeling dit jaar", vertelde Szafnauer. "Het gaat ontzettend taai worden in het middenveld. Het zal een ontwikkelingsrace worden. Gelukkig hebben wij de financiering achter ons om verbeteringen aan de auto te brengen."

Ondanks alle veranderingen in het team blijft Sergio Perez een constante factor. De Mexicaan onthulde dat de instroom van financiering in het team een positieve invloed kan hebben. "De verwachtingen zijn zeer hooggespannen", zei Perez. "We willen om te beginnen het seizoen goed te starten. Ik denk dat als wij in staat zijn om punten te scoren op zondag, het een zeer goede start voor ons zal zijn."

Het behalen van punten in Australië ziet er op het eerste gezicht misschien wel moeilijk uit voor Racing Point, aangezien het team als negende eindigde tijdens de wintertest. Szafnauer legde uit dat de door Mercedes aangedreven RP19 een grote upgrade krijgt voor Melbourne: "Het testen in de winter zag ons onze belangrijkste doelstellingen bereiken en wij namen heel wat positieve dingen mee. De auto die nu in Melbourne actief zal zijn is een totaal verschillende auto die wij in Barcelona hadden. Wij namen het strategische besluit om ons de maximum tijd te geven om de auto te ontwikkelen. Wij willen onze prestaties bij de eerste race maximaliseren en dat betekende dat we een ander testprogramma hebben gedraaid."

"Het is niet gemakkelijk om laat op de dag nieuwe onderdelen te introduceren en we weten dat het een steile leercurve zal zijn, maar we geloven dat deze aanpak op langere termijn vruchten zal afwerpen."

Mercedes zelf waarschijnlijk ook gok ik zomaar. Dan is het nog maar de vraag waar de top 3 t.o.v. elkaar staat.

  Het klopt wel hoor. Updates betekend het bijwerken en upgrade betekend verbeteren. Een upgrade van de RP19 voor Australië en updates gedurende het seizoen.
