Verbaasde en gelukkige Bottas: "Ik weet niet wat ik moet zeggen"

Valtteri Bottas won op een zeer dominante manier de openingsrace van het seizoen in Melbourne. Aan de finish had de Mercedes-coureur 20 seconden voorsprong op teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton. Ook reed hij de snelste ronde van de race, wat een extra punt opleverde.

Bottas kwam bij de start beter weg dan zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton, nam de leiding in de wedstrijd en verloor deze uiteindelijk aan Max Verstappen toen hij zijn stop maakte. Toen Verstappen zijn stop maakte nam Bottas de leiding terug en reed hij gemakkelijk naar de overwinning. De zege in Melbourne was zijn eerste sinds de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi in 2017.

De Fin was verrast en vol ongeloof na afloop van de eerste race van het seizoen. "Ik weet niet wat ik moet zeggen. Het was zeer zeker mijn beste race ooit. Ik weet niet wat er gebeurde, alles voelde zo goed en ik had alles onder controle. De auto was fantastisch vandaag en ik heb het echt naar mijn zin gehad."

Bottas maakte zich aan het einde van de wedstrijd bij de teamleiding hard om de snelste ronde te rijden. "Ik wist dat ik heel snel was en met deze nieuwe regels is dat extra punt een bonus. Ik moest er voor gaan aan het einde van de race. Het is overigens wel riskant om dat met oude banden te doen, maar het heeft gewerkt."

De overwinnaar verklaarde ook dat hij afgelopen winter hard heeft gewerkt om in 2019 sterker aan het vertrek te verschijnen. "Al het werk wat ik de afgelopen winter heb gedaan, alles waar ik mentaal aan gewerkt heb en de samenwerking van met het team hebben er voor gezorgd dat het mijn beste race ooit is geworden."

"In het begin was ik bezig om de race te managen, ik wilde een voorsprong opbouwen. Ik zag na zes à zeven ronden dat ik een gat aan het opbouwen was. Dat was een goed gevoel. Ik wist dat ik het kon, want ik heb het vaker gedaan. Ik werd één met de auto. Na de pitstop voelde het makkelijk, maar dat was het niet", sloot de Finse leider in het wereldkampioenschap af.

Heel goed gedaan. Waanzinnig hoe snel die gozer ging. Was echt een totaal andere race die hij reed. Dit waren Rosberg-achtige prestaties, die was op zijn goede dagen ook echt onklopbaar.
Ocon zat dit weekend bijna constant bij Toto op schoot maar als Bottas zo rijdt dan kan hij beter bij Claire op schoot gaan zitten want dat Mercedes zitje komt zo niet vrij. Heel heel knap.

  Ja die was erg close met toto inderdaad. Zelfs meeklappen met toto nadat bottas op p1 de finish over reed. Iets met boer en kiespijn haha!

  Zijn kwalificatiesnelheid was altijd al goed, dit keer zeer strakke race gereden. Laat hem deze lijn maar doortrekken in de volgende race. Is ook goed voor Lewis, meer concurrentie.
  
  Ik ben wel oprecht benieuwd of Bottas, anders dan vorig seizoen, zich in de race minder laat verschalken. Hoop dat hij zijn zelfvertrouwen nu een flinke boost heeft gegeven.

Business as usual , Hamilton die langzaam opgang komt,, Bottas die ondanks zn winst nog steeds een onzekere pief is , eind van het jaar zal Hamilton weer ruim voor Bottas staan

  Mss onzeker in interviews aangezien hij eerder introvert is. Heb je de race niet gekeken? Indien ja, zou je moeten gemerkt hebben dat Bottas in geen geval aan zelfvertrouwen tekort kwam, wat in't verleden z'n achilleshiel was.

  'heb je de race niet gekeken'?? zinloze opmerking..... Ik geef aan hoe het type Bottas als mens is. Iedereen kan een keer goed scoren, zeker in topsport zijn er met grote regelmaat uitschieters te vinden, punt is hoe iemand als Bottas het over een heel seizoen doet en niet af en toe een oprisping heeft.. We zullen zien waar Bottas echt staat als hij weer een keer een ongelukkige race rijdt, blijft hij dan ook overeind???

Ik ben Bottas criticaster maar kan niet anders zeggen dat hij een dikke 9,5 krijgt voor dit weekend.
Ik wil Mercedes echter waarschuwen: Bottas kakt meestal flink in na de zomerstop dus wacht voorlopig wat langer met die contractverlenging.
