Tevreden Fernando Alonso: "Ik heb nog tegen Jos the Boss gereden"

Fernando Alonso keerde vandaag voor het eerst sinds de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi terug in een Formule 1-auto. De Spanjaard reed een Pirelli-testprogramma en kwam uiteindelijk tot 64 ronden op het Bahrain International Circuit. Alonso, die vorig jaar zijn afscheid aankondigde betreffende de Formule 1, vertelde aan GPToday.net dat hij geen spijt had van zijn beslissing.

Alonso kijkt positief naar toekomst

Sprekende over de MCL34 van 2019 gaf Alonso positieve feedback: "De auto is een stap vooruit, in elk aspect. De auto heeft meer grip, minder drag op de rechte stukken, de motor is een stap vooruit. Als pakket zit de auto in de goede richting. Er is nog een stap te doen om naar de top drie te gaan. Ik denk dat McLaren al een jaar of vier a vijf werkt aan progressie. Er zijn tekenen geweest, maar het is nooit echt tot uiting gekomen. We hebben goede momenten gehad alleen geen constantheid. Voor dit jaar ziet het er voor het team goed uit want er wordt veel aan ontwikkeling gedaan. Het zal een beter seizoen worden voor McLaren."

McLaren moet zich niet verschuilen achter haar doelstelling, Alonso denkt dat het team de weg naar boven heeft ingeslagen: "Ik hoop dat McLaren met Haas kan vechten om de vierde plaats, dat moet het doel van McLaren zijn."

Over een eventuele terugkomst blijft de Spanjaard cryptisch: "Ik hoef niet terug te keren in de Formule 1. Ik heb behaald in de Formule 1 wat ik wilde halen. Ik denk niet dat ik terugkom in de Formule 1. Ik kom alleen terug als ik voor een kampioenschap kan rijden want aan een zevende, vijfde of vierde plaats heb ik niets aan, dat kan mij niet meer motiveren", vertelde hij. Ik rijd nu in andere series, heb ook nog veel doelstellingen dit jaar zoals de Indianapolis 500. Ik heb Daytona gewonnen in een auto van Wayne Taylor Racing en de 12-uur van Sebring voor Toyota."

Schumacher en Verstappen

Het was voor de Spanjaard leuk om weer met een Schumacher op de baan te zijn, Alonso gunt Mick dan ook het allerbeste: "Het was mooi om de naam M.Schumacher met Alonso bovenaan te zien staan. Hij heeft een grote toekomst en hij deed het heel goed in de Formule 3. De naam Schumacher is natuurlijk geweldig. Hij krijgt een lastig jaar in de Formule 2 en ik hoop hem in de Formule 1 te zien, een Schumacher in een Formule 1-auto is altijd geweldig."

"Ik heb dat al met Max gehad", vertelde Alonso toen hem gevraagd werd naar de oude namen die terugkomen op de Formule 1-grid. "Ik heb twee jaar met "Jos the Boss" gereden en toen reed ik plotseling tegen Max. Het is niet dat ik me hierdoor oud ga voelen, Kimi is trouwens nog ouder", sloot hij af.

Mooi toch, Over 15 jaar krijg je dezelfde verhalen van Verstappen/Leclerc/Norris/Russel etc Als ze met een naam racen die Vettel/Hamilton/Raikkonen/Alonso/Button/Webber heet.

Zo cryptisch is Alonso toch niet over een terugkeer naar de Formule 1. Hij zegt heel duidelijk dat hij alleen naar een topteam terug zou keren, omdat vechten voor lagere klasseringen hem niet meer kan motiveren.
