Max Verstappen moest overleg plegen om over te stappen naar Schuberth

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen heeft intern overleg moeten plegen om van helmfabrikant te wisselen, dit meldt motorsport.com op haar website.

De nieuwe helm van Verstappen zit aerodynamisch anders in elkaar dan de Arai-versie. De vorm van de helm is door Adrian Newey meegenomen in het ontwerp van de auto.

Arai, de Japanse fabrikant, heeft een exclusieve deal met Red Bull als het gaat om het leveren van helmen. Alle door Red Bull gecontracteerde coureurs zouden in principe met een helm van Arai moeten rijden. In het geval van Verstappen ligt het iets anders. De Nederlander kwam gedurende de wintertest nog in actie met een exemplaar van Arai, maar door problemen met de certificatie van de helm besloot hij Schuberth als 'back-up' te nemen. Uiteindelijk reed Verstappen zijn eerste twee Grands Prix van het seizoen met een helm van Schuberth.

Helmut Marko geeft hier uitleg over: "Voor het concept van de auto is de Arai-helm als uitgangspunt genomen, desondanks heeft Adrian Newey er mee ingestemd dat Max van helm zou wisselen. Geruchten over een helmwissel van Pierre Gasly werden door Marko ontkent.

Dat is dus de reden van het aerodynamische probleem. Max moet nu weer een Arai-helm opzetten, mits die goedgekeurd wordt, dan is alles opgelost ;-)
