Alonso in 2019-2020 niet voor Toyota in WEC

Fernando Alonso zal het komende in het nieuwe WEC-seizoen naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet de kleuren van Toyota gaan verdedigen. Dat meldt Gary Watkins. De Japanse fabrikant weigert op dit moment commentaar te geven op de speculaties dat de tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 deel zal uitmaken van de line-up voor het seizoen 2019-2020.

Een woordvoerder van Toyota Motorsport GMBH vertelde: "We verwachten onze coureurs voor het volgende seizoen relatief snel te kunnen aankondigen." Hierna werd er gevraagd of Brandon Hartley op een lijstje stond om Alonso eventueel te vervangen. Hierop kon de woordvoerder geen antwoord geven.

Het is duidelijk dat tweevoudig WEC-kampioen en ex-Toro Ross-coureur Hartley al tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans bij Toyota als reservecoureur aan de slag zou kunnen gaan. Alonso, die in 2018/2019 bij Toyota het WEC-superseizoen reed, is vrijblijvend geweest over zijn plannen. Hij zei tijdens de 24 uur van Daytona dat de kansen om door te gaan in het WEC ongeveer 50-50 zijn.

Alonso neemt dit jaar deel aan de 500 mijl van Indianapolis in zijn poging om de 'Triple Crown' te winnen. De Spanjaard gaf afgelopen jaar aan: "Dat ik het gevoel heb dat ik mijn batterij een beetje moet opladen." Daarna verklaarde hij dat hij de mogelijkheid open hield om: "Volgend jaar (2020) in de IndyCar-series actief te zijn, ook sluit ik een terugkeer naar de Formule 1 niet uit."

De Spanjaard heeft inmiddels ook het tweede deel van zijn jacht op de 'Triple Crown' bereikt door de overwinning op Le Mans. Het lijkt erop dat Alonso's wens om zijn opties open te houden voor het volgende seizoen niet past bij de behoefte van Toyota om snel duidelijkheid te geven over het nieuwe WEC-seizoen.

  Kleren of kleuren, het maakt in principe niet zo heel veel uit. Maar ik heb er kleuren van gemaakt. Als jij voor het tekenpapier zorgt, zorg ik voor de juiste kleren. ;)

Ik ben niet verrast.
De man heeft wat die wil, een 24h van LeMans overwinning, in een meer competetief veld dan de F1 ( zijn eigen woorden).
Nu is het tijd voor de indy 500 en daarom waarschijnlijk een volledig seizoen IndyCar.
