Alfa Romeo wisselt Control Electronics; Giovinazzi pakt eerste gridstraf

Antonio Giovinazzi is de eerste coureur die in 2019 tegen een motorgerelateerde gridstraf is aangelopen. De coureur van Alfa Romeo moet 10 plaatsen achteruit op de startgrid, omdat hij zijn derde Control Electronics van dit seizoen gaat gebruiken in Azerbeidzjan.

Alfa Romeo heeft ervoor gekozen om dit weekend bij beide bolides de Control Electronics te vervangen. Dat heeft het team op aanraden van motorleverancier Ferrari gedaan. Het fabrieksteam en Haas F1, het andere team dat Ferrari-motoren gebruikt, wisselden voor de Grand Prix van China al naar hun tweede, vernieuwde exemplaar van de Control Electronics.

Voor Kimi Raikkonen heeft dat voorlopig nog geen gevolgen, want de wereldkampioen van 2007 reed de eerste drie races van 2019 met dezelfde Control Electronics. Voor Giovinazzi zijn de problemen dus wat groter, want hij wisselde in een eerder stadium al noodgedwongen naar zijn tweede exemplaar. Omdat een coureur slechts twee Control Electronics in een seizoen mag gebruiken, komt het de Italiaan op een gridstraf van 10 plaatsen te staan.

Coureurs met Ferrari-motor op scherp

Voor Raikkonen en de overige coureurs met een Ferrari-motor geldt dat ze op scherp staan. Zij maken nu allen gebruik van hun tweede Control Electronics. Het gebruik van een derde exemplaar komt ook hen op een gridstraf te staan.

De coureurs met een Ferrari-motor zijn niet de enigen die op scherp staan. Daniil Kvyat en Alexander Albon krijgen in Azerbeidzjan voor de tweede keer dit seizoen een nieuwe verbrandingsmotor, nadat Honda aankondigde een update mee te brengen. Bij een volgende wissel van de verbrandingsmotor geldt dat zij ook op een gridstraf kunnen rekenen, omdat ze dan boven het maximaal toegestane aantal van drie ICE's zitten.

Ach het enige wat hij hoeft te doen dit jaar is het stoeltje warm te houden voor Mick Schumacher. Ik ben 100% zeker dat Giovinazzi volgend jaar niet meer in F1 zal rijden.

Alhoewel Giovinazzi nog geen indruk op mij heeft gemaakt heeft hij ook nog niet het geluk mee gehad. Ik hoop voor hem dat er wat probleemloze weekenden gaan komen waarin hij wat kan laten zien.

  Lastig om in te schatten hoe goed Mick daadwerkelijk is. Zo een achternaam schept natuurlijk nogal wat verwachtingen, maar interessant is het zeker.
  
  Als Giovinazzi zich niet verbeterd zou ik er niet om rouwen dat hij na dit jaar alweer vertrekt, maar laten we even kijken hoe en of hij zich nog ontwikkelt dit jaar.

  Helaas maakt het niet uit hoe goed Mick Schumacher is. Volgend jaar zal hij voor Alfa Romeo uitkomen in F1. Als hij echt slecht is zal hij het wellicht maar een paar seizoenen kunnen volhouden op alleen zijn achternaam, maar hij zal er sowieso een tijdje gebruik van kunnen maken.

  Ik ben benieuwd. Senna (die eigenlijk gewoon Lalli heette) was bijvoorbeeld best wel een aanfluiting. Die was echt dik langzamer dan Maldonado bijvoorbeeld. Maldonado kwalificeerde vaak rond P6 en Senna stond dan ergens rond P16 t/m P18 rond te bungelen. Maargoed, dat was dan ook een neef en geen vader/zoon.
