Verstappen niet blij: "We hebben allemaal belangrijke tijd verloren"

Max Verstappen is niet blij met de gang van zaken op het Baku City Circuit. De Red Bull Racing-coureur baalt van de loszittende putdeksel, waardoor hij en alle andere coureurs vroegtijdig een einde zagen komen aan hun eerste vrije training.

De eerste vrije training was nog geen kwartier bezig toen George Russell met zijn Williams vol over een loszittende putdeksel tussen bochten 2 en 3 reed. De deksel zorgde daarbij voor veel schade aan de vloer en het chassis van de Williams. De FIA en de organisatie besloten vervolgens om het restant van de sessie af te blazen en alle putdeksels op het circuit te controleren.

Belangrijke tijd verloren door afgelasting

Dat zorgde ervoor dat er niet één, maar twintig slachtoffers waren in Azerbeidzjan. Niemand mocht de baan meer op en Verstappen baalt dat er kostbare tijd verloren is gegaan. "Men maakt zich nu heel erg druk om de veiligheid van de baan, maar dit had om te beginnen natuurlijk al nooit mogen gebeuren. Niet alleen heeft de auto van Russell veel schade opgelopen, we zijn als coureurs allemaal belangrijke trainingsuren verloren, wat ontzettend vervelend is", vertelde hij aan Sky Sports F1.

Verstappen ziet een geluk bij een ongeluk: iedereen heeft er last van en hij is blij dat het niet in VT2 gebeurde. "We zitten allemaal in hetzelfde schuitje, dus voor iedereen is de situatie gelijk. Het klopt dat we minder voorbereidingstijd hebben, maar dat maakt de boel ergens ook weer een stuk spannender. Bovendien is het goed dat het in de eerste vrije training is gebeurd en niet in de tweede oefensessie als iedereen de focus heeft liggen op de race."

Het maakt de race wel een stukkie spannender, nu ze allemaal veel minder tijd hebben om de auto's goed af te stellen. Er gaat vast veel gereden worden in VT 2+3, das dan wel weer leuk zolang je geen Russel heet.

Zou dit gebeurd zijn onder Charlie ? Inspectie van het circuit is duidelijk niet behoorlijk gedaan.

  Montoya viel toch ook een keer uit, vanuit leidende positie door een putdeksel? Volgens mij was dat in Monaco, ook in een Williams toevallig :) Ze moeten die Williamsen wel hebben zeg.

  Als ik het goed heb, viel Montoya ook eens uit door een putdeksel in China, 2005.
  Toen reed hij met een Mclaren over een putduksel, waardoor de ophanging beschadigde.

In ider geval ronduit beláchelijk.
