Binotto hoopt dat Ferrari gridstraffen kan voorkomen na vervroegde update

Ferrari introduceert bij de Spaanse Grand Prix voor het eerst dit jaar een nieuwe krachtbron. Teambaas Mattia Binotto hoopt dat gridstraffen voorkomen kunnen worden door de oude motoren nog in te zetten in vrije trainingen.

Coureurs mogen in 2019 maar drie krachtbronnen gebruiken, waardoor ze gemiddeld zeven races met een motor moeten doen. Ferrari heeft er na race 4 echter al voor gekozen om een nieuwe krachtbron te introduceren. Het lijkt daardoor lastig te worden voor het team om maar drie motoren te gebruiken in 2019, maar Binotto houdt vertrouwen. "Dit betekent niet dat we de eerste motor niet meer kunnen gebruiken in vrije trainingen. We hopen echter niet per coureur vier motoren te gebruiken dit seizoen."

Update vervroegd na tegenvallende race Australië

Oorspronkelijk zou Ferrari in Canada met de eerste update voor de krachtbron komen. Binotto geeft toe dat de introductie van 'spec 2' vervroegd is naar aanleiding van de tegenvallende resultaten in de Australische Grand Prix. "Als je zo'n verandering opneemt in je schema of planning, dan moet je dat een aantal weken daarvoor doen."

"Het is niet iets wat we vorige week besloten hebben. Bij de start van het seizoen in Melbourne zagen we dat we vergeleken met de concurrenten achter lagen qua prestaties. We hebben simpelweg geprobeerd te pushen op de terreinen waar we al wilden ontwikkelen en we keken naar kansen en het anticiperen op een aantal problemen."

"We hebben het ook al gedaan met een aero-pakket in Bakoe, die op een of andere manier eerder geïntroduceerd werd. Hier hebben we dat voor de power unit gedaan. Dat bereik je door soms misschien een binnenbocht te nemen of door de activiteit te intensiveren. Ik moet zeggen dat de mensen in Maranello de activiteiten geïntensiveerd hebben en dat we nog steeds hard werken. Dat moeten we op dit moment doen."

Er is nu weinig over te zeggen en morgen zal er een beter beeld zijn.

Offtopic: McLaren, Renault en Mercedes gaan de 18 inch velgen testen voor Pirelli. Toch weer opmerkelijk dat Mercedes weer van de partij is........
