Sergey Sirotkin test 18-inch banden van Pirelli

Renault heeft bevestigd dat hun reservecoureur Sergey Sirotkin zal worden toegewezen aan het ontwikkelingprogramma van Pirelli voor 2021. De Rus zal gebruik gaan maken van de Renault uit 2018 om de nieuwe banden te testen.

McLaren en Mercedes hebben zich beide beschikbaar gesteld om aan het project mee te werken, van hen wordt verwacht dat ze aan het einde van het seizoen elk twee dagen met de 18-inch banden zullen testen.

"Het plan is om Sergey te laten rijden. Hij heeft een goede kennis van onze auto en hij heeft recente kennis van Pirelli-banden. Daarnaast is hij heel goed in het geven van een uitgebreide feedback", verklaarde Renault. Het is duidelijk dat de Russische-coureur een uitstekende testrijder is aangezien hij een doctoraat heeft in engineering. In het verleden was het team van Williams zeer lovend over de feedback van de Rus.

Slechts drie teams beschikbaar

Alle tien huidige Formule 1-teams kregen de kans om deel te nemen aan de test, maar de meesten waren terughoudend om zich aan te melden vanwege de kosten voor de ontwikkeling van een aangepaste auto. Renault was de eerste die zich aanmeldde, daarna kwamen McLaren en Mercedes.

Ferrari verklaarde dat ze niet de tijd en middelen hadden en Red Bull had geen geschikte auto omdat het dit jaar van motor leverancier wisselde.

Cyril Abiteboul, de teambaas van Renault was duidelijk dat het team dit deed met de bedoeling om zoveel mogelijk kennis over de nieuwe band te vergaren: "Het was een voorstel aangeboden door Pirelli en alle teams. Het was ook een verzoek van Pirelli en ik denk dat we de plicht hebben om ervoor te zorgen dat Pirelli de capaciteit heeft om haar werk goed te doen", verklaarde de Renault-teambaas.
