De Vries: "Sleutel tot succes is een aardig tempo en uit de problemen blijven"

Nyck de Vries mag vrijdag de hoofdrace van de Formule 2 in Monaco vanaf de eerste positie aanvangen. De Nederlander weet na het dramatische einde van zijn race in 2018 wat er nodig is om te kunnen winnen in het prinsdom.

In 2018 mocht De Vries de hoofdrace in Monaco ook vanaf de eerste positie aanvangen. De toenmalig coureur van Prema zette toen in de race vol de druk erop bij leider Alexander Albon, maar beiden haalden het podium niet. De Vries en Albon botsten met elkaar bij het binnenrijden van de pits, waardoor een goede klassering door het putje ging. De polesitter van 2019 vertelde GPToday.net dat hij nu weet wat hij moet doen om een herhaling te voorkomen.

"Vorig jaar botsten Alexander en ik bij het binnenrijden van de pits, toen we streden om de overwinning. We wisten allebei dat het een cruciaal moment in de race was, want degene die als eerste uit de pits zou komen, zou de race gaan winnen. Het liet ook zien dat Monaco een lange race is en dat er van alles kan gebeuren. Men lijkt hier veel posities te winnen door de juiste beslissingen te nemen en uit de problemen te blijven."

Meerdere factoren leiden tot succes in Monaco

Het geheime recept voor succes ligt volgens De Vries bij een combinatie van factoren. De snelheid moet goed zijn, maar ook moet je als coureur uit de problemen blijven en goede keuzes maken. "Volgens mij omschreef Luca Ghiotto het erg goed: je moet erbij zitten en de ronden blijven rijden. Je moet aardige rondetijden rijden, uit de problemen blijven en op de juiste momenten de juiste beslissingen nemen. Dat is erg belangrijk."

Het dienstverband van De Vries bij het Formule 1-team van McLaren zit er inmiddels op en er wordt gesproken over een samenwerking met een ander team. Daar wil de Nederlander zelf nog steeds niets over kwijt. "Helaas kan ik daar niet op antwoorden."

Snelheid is er, zowel bij de wagen als coureur. Goed op de bandjes letten en de overwinning is zo goed als binnen.

  idd, jammer van vorig jaar. ben wel wat angstig voor die bandjes ja. hij lijkt mij daar niet het beste mee om te kunnen gaan, maar ik ken de ins en outs niet.

  Wellicht helpt het hem dat hij ook WEC rijdt en daar wat kan leren over het sparen van banden. Afgelopen jaren en ook begin dit seizoen speelde dat hem nog behoorlijk parten. Als hij dat goed voor elkaar weet te krijgen, zal hij zomaar het kampioenschap kunnen pakken. De auto lijkt goed genoeg en hij heeft zelf ook genoeg pure snelheid.
