Verstappen test vandaag op Paul Ricard regenbanden voor Pirelli

Enkele dagen na de Grand Prix van Monaco mag Max Verstappen vandaag alweer aan de bak. De Red Bull Racing-coureur is afgereisd naar het Franse Paul Ricard om voor bandenleverancier Pirelli de regenbanden voor 2020 te testen.

Pirelli werkt een uitgebreid testprogramma af voor de banden van 2020, waarbij iedere keer verschillende teams in actie komen op de prototypen van de banden die volgend seizoen gebruikt moeten gaan worden. Zo testten Scuderia Toro Rosso en McLaren voor de bandenleverancier in Bahrein, terwijl Ferrari en Racing Point al getest hebben na afloop van de Grand Prix van Spanje. Deze testen vonden plaats op een droge baan en op slicks.

In Paul Ricard worden echter de regenbanden getest. Het idee daarachter is dat het Franse circuit beschikt over een sprinklerinstallatie, waardoor het asfalt nat kan worden gemaakt en gehouden. Voor Pirelli biedt dat een perfecte gelegenheid om de regenbanden voor volgend jaar eens onder de loep te nemen. Ferrari en Red Bull Racing zijn de aangewezen teams om dat te doen.

Ferrari alleen op dag 1 aanwezig, Red Bull op beide dagen

Ferrari was alleen op dinsdag aanwezig voor de test, waarbij zowel Sebastian Vettel als Charles Leclerc in actie kwam. Gezamenlijk kwamen ze tot 110 ronden op de prototypen van de regenbanden voor 2020. Pierre Gasly zat dinsdag achter het stuur van de Red Bull RB15 en reed 108 ronden over het Franse circuit.

Woensdag is alleen Red Bull Racing nog aanwezig om testwerkzaamheden voor Pirelli te verrichten in Frankrijk. Gasly maakt op die dag plaats voor Verstappen, die vandaag dus voor het eerst mag proeven aan hoe de regenbanden voor 2020 aan zullen voelen.

De testdagen van gisteren en vandaag zijn de enige testdagen die Pirelli gepland heeft met de regenbanden voor 2020. In de komende maanden zullen er echter nog wel een aantal tests verricht worden met de verschillende bandencompounds voor op het droge asfalt.

  Deze test gaat over regenbanden, maar Mercedes heeft idd voordeel gehad van de nieuwe banden voor 2019. Als het loopvlak van de 2020 band weer dikker wordt is dat in het voordeel van RBR.

  Dat is veel te kort door de bocht. Mercedes kan als één van de weinige teams met veel meer downforce rijden, vanwege de motor. Door die hoge downforce drukt de Mercedes de warmte wel in de banden, andere teams met minder downforce kunnen dat minder.
  Ferrari heeft een concept wat inzet op hoge rechtelijn snelheid. Dat begint al, zichtbaar, bij de afwijkende voorvleugel en vertaalt zich door tot voorbij de diffuser. Gevolg van dit concept is de hogere rechtelijnsnelheid waardoor gedacht wordt dat de Ferrari motor beter is dan de Mercedes motor. Fout.
  
  Met de ontwikkeling van de Honda motor kan Red Bull haar auto’s ook agressiever op downforce ontwikkelen. Dan zou ook Res Bull met een dikker loopvlak issues kunnen krijgen met een dikker loopvlak.
  Issue daarbij is overigens niet de dikte, maar het verschil in temperatuur tussen loopvlakdeel en canvasdeel, waardoor die twee delen los kunnen komen, hetgeen zichtbaar wordt als blaren.

  @Snork, het afgelopen jaar kregen de rijders van Mercedes veel problemen met een te hoge temperatuur in hun banden. Dit hebben ze ten dele op kunnen lossen met een ander velg ontwerp, maar de echte winst is behaald doordat het loopvlak dunner is geworden. Door die constuctie wordt de band minder snel warm of te warm in geval van Mercedes.
  
  Red Bull heeft zelf aangegeven dat hun ontwerp in 2018 was gebasseerd om de onderkant qua temperatuurs range (operating tyre window) van de banden. In 2019 zitten ze zelfs onder dat window en hebben ze grote moeite de verschillende banden in het window te krijgen. Lees verslag baku.
  
  Mercedes zit dit jaar spot on qua temparatuur in de banden. Waarschijnlijk geholpen door de extra downforce en die beide geven extra veel tractie. Banden op de juiste temparatuur heeft je extra grip en sluiten ze minder snel. Tijdens de wintertest in Abu Dhabi hebben ze kunnen achterhalen in welk window de banden zouden zitten.
  
  Wat je zegt over het Ferrari vs Mercedes ontwerp klopt precies. downforce geeft minder topsnelheid en de Ferrari heeft ook minder drag door de voorvleugel.
