Verstappen verwacht competitiever Ferrari in Canada: "We zullen maximaliseren"

De Grand Prix van Canada staat komend weekend op het programma en Max Verstappen heeft er zin in. De coureur van Red Bull Racing verwacht een sterk Ferrari en voor zichzelf en het team een iets lastiger weekend dan in Monaco.

Het Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is ook dit jaar weer de thuishaven van de Canadese Grand Prix, die dit jaar voor de vijftigste keer onderdeel is van het wereldkampioenschap Formule 1. Op het oog lijkt het circuit op het Île Notre-Dame niet bijzonder technisch met de vele lange rechte stukken en betrekkelijk langzame bochten, maar volgens Verstappen ligt dat iets anders.

"Het circuit is eigenlijk behoorlijk uitdagend, hoewel het eruit ziet alsof er veel rechte stukken zijn. De chicanes en de manier waarop je over de kerbs rijdt zijn belangrijk, want het kan je veel tijd kosten als je een fout maakt. Het is allemaal met elkaar verbonden, links naar rechts of rechts naar links, en als je in een van hen een fout maakt, dan is je hele combinatie naar de knoppen."

Verstappen komt graag naar Canada

De Grand Prix van Canada heeft regelmatig leuke races opgeleverd. De regenrace van 2011 staat bekend als een van de meest spectaculaire races ooit, maar ook in 2010 en 1999 gebeurde er genoeg op het semi-stratencircuit in de St. Lawrencerivier. De remzones op het circuit bieden een aantal goede inhaalmogelijkheden en dat bevalt Verstappen wel. "Het is een leuk circuit waar je tenminste kan inhalen als het nodig is en ik geniet er altijd van om erheen te gaan."

Red Bull Racing en Verstappen maakten in Monaco een prima indruk. Op basis van snelheid was de Nederlander Ferrari de baas, maar uiteindelijk moest hij zich schikken in de vierde positie na een tijdstraf. In Canada verwacht Verstappen een sterker Ferrari. "Ik verwacht dat Ferrari competitiever is in Canada, dus voor ons wordt het misschien iets lastiger. Zoals altijd zullen we wel proberen het resultaat te maximaliseren."

Verstappen én Redbull zijn hier de laatste jaren erg competitief. Vorig jaar met de zwakke Renault motor kwamen ze zelfs maar anderhalf tiende tekort op pole. Zal zeer zwaar worden maar wellicht kan hij aankomend weekend écht vechten voor de eerst startrij

  Mercedes zal ook hier de lakens uitdelen, ieder resultaat beter dan P3 is een meevaller.

  Max was verleden jaar de snelste in alle 3 de vrije trainingen en werd uiteindelijk 3e terwijl er gewoon 2 Mercedessen en 2 Ferrari's finishte, het jaar ervoor viel Max uit toen hij 2e lag.

  Canada is wel altijd zwaar voor de bandjes.
  De RBR van dit jaar is ontworpen om zacht voor de banden te zijn. Helaas krijgen ze daardoor vaak te weinig temperatuur in die banden en zitten ze net niet in het juiste window. Waar Mercedes juist zwaar voor de banden is maar daardoor wel de temperatuur juist krijgt. Dat scheelt soms een seconde.
  In Canada kan deze typische karakteristiek RBR in de kaart spelen. Overigens Ferrari ook want die zijn ook zeer zacht voor de bandjes maar wel nog te traag in de langzamere bochten.
  Het zou mij niet verbazen als het allemaal een stuk dichterbij elkaar zit dit weekend.
