Leclerc ziet Canadese Grand Prix niet als 'nu of nooit-race'

Charles Leclerc is niet van mening dat bij de Grand Prix van Canada geldt dat het een 'nu of nooit-race' is voor hem en Ferrari. Wel vertelde de Monegask dat hij zijn aanpak na de kwalificatie in Azerbeidzjan heeft aangepast.

De eerste zes races verliepen niet naar wens voor Ferrari. Mercedes was zes keer het winnende team, terwijl Sebastian Vettel pas in Monaco met P2 zijn beste resultaat van het seizoen haalde voor de Scuderia. Leclerc moet het doen met een derde plaats in Bahrein. Voor Canada lijkt Ferrari echter als de favoriet te gelden, omdat de topsnelheid van de SF90 zo goed is. Volgens Leclerc is er desondanks geen sprake van een race waarin het móét gebeuren.

Leclerc spreekt geen verwachting uit

“Ik zie het niet als een 'nu of nooit-race'. Zoals gezegd hebben we na deze race een derde van het seizoen gehad, dus het is belangrijk dat we terug zullen komen. Uiteindelijk moeten we ons werk zo goed mogelijk doen. Het is niet nodig om onszelf meer druk op te leggen. We proberen harder dan ooit het maximale te halen uit wat we hebben en te begrijpen waar we ons kunnen verbeteren.”

Ferrari lijkt op basis van topsnelheid de lichte favoriet te zijn, maar Leclerc durft geen concrete doelstelling uit te spreken. “Wat betreft een duidelijke positie weet ik het niet. Ik wil gewoon het beste halen uit wat we hebben, zodat we na de vrije trainingen weten waar we staan. Voorafgaand aan het weekend is mijn doel altijd om zo hoog mogelijk te eindigen. We zullen alles geven.”

Andere aanpak in kwalificatie na crash in Bakoe

Leclerc is in zijn eerste seizoen bij Ferrari niet foutloos gebleken. De Formule 2-kampioen van 2017 legt Vettel regelmatig het vuur aan de schenen, maar hij maakte ook al een aantal fouten. Zo crashte hij in de kwalificatie in Azerbeidzjan en was hij ook onstuimig in de Monagaskische Grand Prix. De crash in Bakoe was voor Leclerc aanleiding om zijn aanpak aan te passen.

"Een aanpak die ik veranderd heb na Bakoe is het te hard pushen in Q2. Dat was een fout, want we hadden de potentie om eenvoudig naar Q3 te gaan. Op dat moment crashen was dom, zoals ik al meerdere malen gezegd heb. Daarna brak er in Barcelona een stuk van de vloer af omdat ik te hard pushte. Ik ging wijd en een onderdeel brak af. Dit is dus een van de dingen die ik veranderd heb."

  Eens maar of hij er komt, hangt van veel factoren af. Vraag is hoe je omgaat met die continue druk van verplichtingen, media, geld, vrouwen...favoriete hobby als professie hebben en...wacht! Ik word ook F1 rijder.

  Hij houdt in ieder geval de moed er nog vol in want hij gelooft nog in het kampioenschap dit seizoen, 80 puntjes inlopen op Hamilton, ja het kan nog (theoretisch)

Hij komt er ook wel. hij mist alleen ervaring en bovenal de goede sturing van Ferrari. Had hem bij RB gezet en hij had veel meer kunnen leren. er staat zo veel druk op die gast. Niet normaal. Max/Vettel/Hamilton maakte/maken ook foutjes maar het lijkt wel alsof hij door de fans van Ferrari als de nieuwe messias wordt gezien. Newsflash: zo simpel is dat niet. Alles moet bij elkaar komen en pas dan heb je een kans.

  hij/Ferrari leren blijkbaar ook niet echt snel, dit zegt niks dit jaar. ze gaan als een malle in de trainingen en denken dan dat het wel goed komt.

  Niet alleen de fans van Ferrari. Er zijn een aantal analisten die Leclerc stevast als derde in een race voorspellen. In Monaco zelfs in de mix met Mercedes. En dat zijn niet de miste vind ik: Priestley en Windsor. Uieindelijk gaan ze natuurlijk een keer gelijk krijgen.

Als hij wat meer ervaring heeft en van zijn foutjes heeft geleerd , zie ik hem echt de bovenliggende partij bij Ferrari en dat hoeft echt niet lang te duren
