Williams ontkent dat Kubica dit seizoen vervangen gaat worden

Robert Kubica lijkt zeker te zijn van zijn plekje bij Williams dit seizoen. Het Britse team heeft geen plannen om de Pool te vervangen, zo vertelde plaatsvervangend teambaas Claire Williams op Silverstone.

De rentree van Kubica in de Formule 1 verloopt niet zoals gehoopt voor de pool. Hij is consistent langzamer dan teamgenoot George Russell en rijdt dan ook vooral op de laatste positie rond. Dat bleek de vonk te zijn voor geruchten om hem nog dit seizoen te vervangen, maar Williams stelt dat het team geen andere coureur gaat zoeken voor de rest van het jaar 2019.

"Ik vind speculatie redelijk frustrerend, want je weet niet wat er speelt tenzij je erbij betrokken bent. Onze relatie met Robert is zo sterk als die was. Hij doet wat hij moet doen en we proberen er alles aan te doen dat we hem een betere auto geven, zodat hij op het niveau kan presteren dat hij wil. Van onze kant zijn er geen frustraties. Ik weet zeker dat hij wat frustratie heeft, omdat hij niet de tools heeft die hij had willen hebben op dit moment."

Williams begonnen met denken over line-up 2020

Williams bevestigde wel dat het team al bezig is met welke coureurs de zitjes komend seizoen gaan vullen. Er zal echter niet eerder een besluit komen dan in het derde kwart van 2019. "We zijn pas halverwege het seizoen, dus het is nog wat vroeg voor ons om te beginnen met denken aan 2020 en de coureurs voor volgend jaar."

"We hebben er al wel even over gedacht, maar we zijn nog niet in de positie om al definitieve keuzes te maken. Dat zal waarschijnlijk ook niet voor het derde kwart van het jaar gebeuren. Er is geen enkele gedachte om Robert tijdens het seizoen te vervangen. Absoluut niet."

Het lijkt mij ook sterk dat Williams dit jaar zich nog zo weet te ontwikkelen dat ze op eigen kracht punten kunnen gaan scoren. Dus Kubica gewoon laten zitten tot en met de laatste race zou wel zo klasse wezen richting de man. Kubica was in zijn hoogdagen een ongelofelijk goed coureur die in zowel 2008 als 2010 in aanmerking kwam voor rijder van het seizoen. En nu hij na die lelijke rally crash zich heeft weten terug te knokken tot de koningsklasse van de autosport zou het wel zo mooi zijn om hem dit seizoen af te laten maken.

Ik vind Kubica zijn verhaal enorm tragisch voor zowel hemzelf als de sport in het algemeen gezien zijn kwaliteiten en potentieel dat hij vertoonde in de BMW Sauber en vervolgens Renault wagens. In de autosport wereld schaarden veel mensen hem anno 2010 tot de top-3 met Hamilton en Alonso en boven mannen als Vettel en Button. Hele sympathieke old skool persoonlijkheid en coureur met een no-nonsense mentaliteit ala Raikkonen. Ik ben van overtuigd dat hij voldoende talent had om kampioen te kunnen worden en wellicht wel meermaals, in de juiste omstandigheden en materiaal.

Waarom zou je dat doen, je blijft toch laatst of een na laatst. Vindt dat Kubica gezien zijn status het seizoen gewoon zou moeten afmaken. Zoveel respect verdient hij wel.

Zolang er geen correur met een grotere zak geld.langs komt is er ook geen reden om hem te vervangen. Dat stoeltje hebben ze verkocht. En door zijn slechte prestaties en handycap halen ze toch het nieuws. Daar worden de sponsoren dan weer happy van.
