Ricciardo: "Vanavond wellicht herdenkingsdienst voor kapotte motor"

De dag van Daniel Ricciardo op Silverstone eindigde met een domper. De motor van zijn Renault gaf de geest, maar desondanks heeft de Australiër er vertrouwen in dat hij de rest van het weekend competitief zal zijn.

Na afloop van de vrije training bevestigde Renault dat een motorisch probleem ervoor zorgde dat Ricciardo geen echte lange run rijden tijdens VT2. Het betrof echter de spec A-motor van begin dit seizoen, dus Ricciardo zal voor de derde vrije training terug wisselen naar de spec B-motor die hij hoe dan ook tijdens de race zal gebruiken. Zelf was Ricciardo ondanks het probleem niet ontevreden over zijn dag.

"Het ging goed, maar tijdens VT2 hadden we het iets lastiger. Ik heb er echter vertrouwen in dat we morgen competitief zullen zijn. Aan het eind van de sessie hadden we een probleem, waarbij de motor zichzelf uitschakelde. Daar zijn we nu naar aan het kijken. Misschien hebben we vanavond nog een herdenkingsdienst voor die motor, maar dat zullen we zien."

Ricciardo tevreden over nieuwe asfaltlaag

De omstandigheden waren niet gemakkelijk op de vrijdag op Silverstone. Het waaide flink en er is voor de race van dit jaar wederom een nieuwe asfaltlaag neergelegd op het circuit. Dat zorgde voor veel uitglijders in de eerste en tweede vrije training. Ricciardo is echter tevreden over het nieuwe asfalt, dat volgens hem alleen bij bocht 6 nog wat hobbelig is.

"Het is altijd winderig op Silverstone, maar het nieuwe asfalt is eigenlijk behoorlijk goed. Op bepaalde plaatsen geeft het een hoop grip. Aanvankelijk was het vanochtend behoorlijk glad en olie-achtig, maar het rubber maakte het beter. Dat zal het hele weekend ook beter blijven worden. Op sommige plekken is het nog steeds erg hobbelig en ik denk dat de jongens uit de MotoGP bocht 6 niets zullen vinden. Voor de rest is het prima."

  Hij en Renault zouden een baas zijn als ze ook echt een plechtigheid voor die motor zouden houden als die is overleden :D

Ricciardo zou zomaar 7de kunnen worden in kwalificatie. Mogelijk 8ste. Maar vanaf plek 8 tot plek 16 of zo zat 3 tiende tussen.
Hij hoeft alleen maar zijn faam als kwalificatiebeest waar te maken. Norris was de enige die een gat sloeg met het middenveld. Je zou haast zeggen als je naar de laatste races kijkt dat hij voor kwalificatie het middenveld ontstegen is.

  Het is wel opvallend dat Norris zo goed presteerd in Quali. In F2 en F3 was hij vooral een racemonster en als hij een mindere prestatie had, kwam t al omdat er een super beroerde kwalli gereden was waardoor hij zich terug moest vechten. Flinke stap gemaakt denk ik dan maar.

  Tot Oostenrijk vond ik hem erg onzeker in veel races. Dat vertelde hij overigens ook. Het manneke is erg spontaan in wat hij zegt zo lijkt het. In Oostenrijk dacht hij toen hij naast Hamilton reed: kan dat wel? Laat ik het maar doen. En vervolgens liet hij de auto er naast. Eerste keer dat hij in F1 echt ballen toonde. Nog even en hij is in de race even goed als Sainz. In kwalificatie is hij dat al.
