Verstappen blij met nieuw asfalt op Silverstone: "Bocht 6 en 9 nog wel hobbelig"

Max Verstappen is overwegend positief over de nieuwe asfaltlaag op Silverstone. Deze levert volgens de Red Bull-coureur meer grip, maar desondanks zijn er nog wel een aantal hobbelige stukken.

Silverstone werd voorafgaand aan de Formule 1- en MotoGP-races van 2018 al opnieuw geasfalteerd, maar vanuit beide categorieën kwamen er klachten over het nieuwe wegdek. Vooral de rijders in de MotoGP waren daarbij niet te spreken over hoe hobbelig het asfalt was. Daarop werd besloten om het circuit voor de edities van 2019 wederom opnieuw te asfalteren.

Hamilton ontevreden, Verstappen erkent hobbelige punten

Tijdens de eerste vrije training volgde er echter meteen alweer een klacht over de asfaltlaag, die volgens Lewis Hamilton nog steeds zeer hobbelig zou zijn. Verstappen lijkt het daar niet helemaal mee eens te zijn. De Nederlander is tevreden over het nieuwe asfalt, maar erkent wel dat er twee punten op het circuit zijn waar er nog wel veel hobbels in het wegdek zitten.

"Het nieuwe asfalt is prima, want het geeft meer grip. Wel is het behoorlijk hobbelig bij het ingaan van bocht 6. Ik zou niet zeggen dat het slechter is dan vorig jaar. Ook richting bocht 9, Copse, is het behoorlijk slecht. Dat zijn de minder goede stukken, maar over het algemeen is het asfalt goed. Het heeft meer grip, maar op sommige stukken is het nog steeds redelijk hobbelig."

Renault-coureur Daniel Ricciardo lijkt zich aan te sluiten bij de lezing van Verstappen. "Op bepaalde plaatsen geeft het een hoop grip. Aanvankelijk was het vanochtend behoorlijk glad en olie-achtig, maar het rubber maakte het beter. Dat zal het hele weekend ook beter blijven worden. Op sommige plekken is het nog steeds erg hobbelig en ik denk dat de jongens uit de MotoGP bocht 6 niets zullen vinden. Voor de rest is het prima."

  Bleekemolen beweerde dat er vanuit een instantie was gevraagd dat Mercedes een tandje langzamer zou gaan rijden in Oostenrijk ....zou goed voor de sport zijn.....

Een van de dingen die Hamilton zo mooi vond aan Melbourne, dat het circuit hobbelig en daardoor lastig is, vindt hij voor het 2e jaar op rij vervelend bij Silverstone... dus Lewis wat moet het nou zijn, glad geplaveid asfalt of niet?

Het probleem met gloednieuw asfalt is dat er buiten de racelijn heel weinig grip is, dat gaat nog wel een "dingetje" worden Zondag bij de hopelijk vele inhaalpogingen.
