Grosjean: "Specificatie auto uit Melbourne voelde veel beter aan"

Haas F1 reed op Silverstone met twee auto's van een verschillende specificatie. Dat experiment zet het team voort in Duitsland en Romain Grosjean is daar blij mee, omdat hij de specificatie van Australiër veel beter vond aanvoelen.

Door met auto's van verschillende specificaties te rijden, wil Haas F1 achterhalen wat er dit jaar fout is gegaan. Na tien races staat het Amerikaanse team negende in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. Kevin Magnussen rijdt in Duitsland wederom met de nieuwste specificatie, terwijl Grosjean wederom plaatsneemt in de auto met de specificatie van de eerste race in Australië.

"Het was een goede test. Een lastige beslissing voor het team, maar wel een goede test. Toen we de upgrade meenamen naar Barcelona, wilde ik op vrijdagavond terug naar het oude pakket. Het gevoel was aan de achterkant niet zo goed, vooral in de redelijk snelle en snelle bochten. Sindsdien is het gevoel in die bochten niet goed."

"De auto voelde een stuk beter toen ik terugging naar de specificatie van Melbourne. Het laat zien dat er iets niet werkte zoals verwacht. De jongens van de aerodynamica kijken er nu naar, maar we weten dat het onze zwakte is. Natuurlijk heeft het pakket van de lancering ook wat beperkingen. Die heeft bijvoorbeeld minder downforce, maar de stabiliteit is beter."

Geen zorgen om toekomst bij Grosjean

Grosjean heeft het lastig dit seizoen en dat leidt tot speculatie over zijn toekomst. De Fransman maakt zich echter geen zorgen. "Het verandert niets aan de zaak. Ik ga met hetzelfde doel als altijd naar Hockenheim. Ik probeer altijd mijn best te doen, een goede race te rijden en trots te zijn op wat ik gedaan heb. Als dat een top 10 is, geweldig. Zo niet, dan heb je alles gegeven."

Het is duidelijk dat Grosjean totaal geen verstand heeft van de technologie.
Als je je team geen feedback kan geven waarmee ze de wagen beter kunnen maken, wat ben je dan mee bezig?

  Ik denk dat het over het geheel beter maken van een auto meer de rol is van de specialisten daarvoor binnen het team. De coureur zal hooguit een grote rol spelen in het verbeteren van de balans door te werken aan de setup van de auto. Als de auto in de basis echter niet goed is dan kan je blijven sleutelen aan de setup, maar je gaat er geen kampioenschappen mee winnen,
  
  De rol van mannen als Colin Chapman, Rory Byrne, Adrian Newey en Aldo Costa moet je ook niet onderschatten.

Ik heb het altijd voor hem opgenomen omdat hij bloedsnel kan zijn en ik hoopte dat hij na zijn periode bij Lotus stabiel zou blijven, maar helaas.....

Ik zou proberen de Hulk te krijgen, die zijn contract loopt aan het eind van dit seizoen af, is niet gelukkig bij Renault en de topteams lijken geen belangstelling voor hem te hebben.

  Of anders Perez. Een Mexicaan in een Amerikaans team kan prima en bovendien kan ik me niet voorstellen dat Perez nu heel gelukkig wordt van rijden voor team Stroll.
