Kubica: "Zicht op Hockenheim slechter dan in het donker met mist tijdens rally"

Halverwege het seizoen 2019 staat Williams eindelijk op het scorebord na het puntje dat Robert Kubica in Duitsland pakte. De Pool kwam er echter wel achter dat het zicht in regenachtige condities verre van goed is.

Kubica hield zijn hoofd koel in de lastige, wisselende weersomstandigheden op Hockenheim. Daar waar topcoureurs in de fout gingen, haalde de enkelvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar de finish en dat deed hij op P12. Door straffen voor de Alfa Romeo's promoveerde hij naar P10, waarmee Kubica het eerste punt van Williams in 2019 pakte. Tevens was het zijn eerste WK-punt sinds 2010.

Tijdens de race herontdekte Kubica dat het zicht in de regen tijdens Formule 1-races bar slecht kan zijn. Hij verklaarde na afloop dat hij zelfs meer zicht had toen hij in zijn rallycarrière in het donker moest rijden toen het mistig was dan in de openingsronde op Hockenheim. "Ik was vergeten hoeveel spray en hoe weinig zicht er is. Ik heb nachtetappes in de mist gereden met rally-auto's."

"Je zet de lichten dan uit omdat ze niet helpen in de nacht met mist. Het is gek, maar je kan in ieder geval zien en je hebt aanwijzigingen, dus je weet waar je heen moet. Hier was het niet makkelijk en ik wist niet waar ik was, vooral in de eerste ronde. Ik nam gas terug en dat deed iedereen, vooral omdat ik een conservatieve aanpak had en moeite had met de grip en het op de baan houden van de auto."

Kubica koos eigen tempo in regen

Doorslaggevend voor Kubica was dat hij zijn eigen tempo zocht en niet over de limieten van zijn auto heen ging. "Het was een waardevolle ervaring en negen jaar is zeker een lange periode. In deze omstandigheden gaat het volgens mij nog steeds om je kop erbij te houden en kalm te blijven. De meeste auto's zijn sneller dan ons, maar je moet naar je eigen limieten rijden en niet op wat je om je heen ziet."

Ik zag de onboard beelden van meerdere coureurs. Niet normaal hoe slecht het zicht door al die spray was. Dan zie je weer dat ze bij de beste coureurs ter wereld horen. Dan zie je gelijk hoeveel voordeel het oplevert om op p1 te rijden.

Sssssssssssst robert. Dalijk ga je het nog gevaarlijk noemen ook. Dat gaat er bij de ´vroegah was alles veul geveerlijker en sneller´ niet in.

Op de insta van F1 staat een onboard beeld van Norris waarbij het team hem vraagt hoe het zicht is. Daar is goed te zien hoe slecht het zicht was tijdens de eerste rondjes.

Lijkt me echt scary om daar in te hebben. Daarin zie toch maar dat de 20 F1 rijders heus wel stuk voor stuk uit goed hout gesneden zijn! Erg knappe prestatie.

Wat een opmerking van kubica….
Bij rally zit je droog,, het overzicht is groter met de aanwijzingen van de bijrijder/kaart lezer.

"De meeste auto's zijn sneller dan ons..." dan WIJ Robert... dan wij.
Maar ik vond de spray wel meevallen vergeleken met sommige andere races. Dat je achteraan rijdt maakt het in dit geval bijna net zo 'eenvoudig' als vooraan. De Williams' worden dermate snel op afstand gereden dat de spray m.i. wel meevalt. De racelijn was notabene de helft van de race zo goed als droog. Had Kubica wel als één van de laatsten verwachten die daarover zijn beklag zou doen.
