Vettel: "Binotto bewaart de rust bij Ferrari ondanks lastige seizoensstart"

Het seizoen 2019 verloopt niet zoals gehoopt voor Ferrari, maar binnen het team blijft iedereen kalm. Dat is volgens Sebastian Vettel te danken aan teambaas Mattia Binotto.

Binotto nam begin 2019 de taak als teambaas bij Ferrari over van Maurizio Arrivabene, die eind 2018 de deur gewezen werd. Tot dusver is de Scuderia er echter niet in geslaagd om een race te winnen dit jaar, hoewel het team er drie keer erg dichtbij was. Vettel vindt het niet eerlijk om de twee teambazen te vergelijken, maar hij looft Binotto wel voor zijn kalme leiderschap.

"Ik denk niet dat het eerlijk is om ze met elkaar te vergelijken. Ieder jaar en iedere situatie is anders. Een ding wat we wel bereikt hebben als team met Mattia als onze leider, is dat we kalm blijven. De situatie is niet makkelijk geweest en we hebben niet gewonnen. Dat is niet de meest normale situatie die je kan hebben. We hadden niet de eerste seizoenshelft waar iedereen op hoopte."

Tevredenheid bij Vettel over Binotto

"Toch is de focus er en iedereen binnen het team blijft kalm en vastberaden om zo snel mogelijk progressie te boeken. Sommige dingen gaan niet over een nacht ijs, maar we weten goed hoe we ervoor staan met de auto, wat we moeten doen, en hopelijk kiezen we de juiste richting voor de komende maanden. Mattia doet het echter erg goed; hij houdt het team kalm en samen."

"Tegelijkertijd herinnert hij ons eraan waar we naartoe moeten. Zijn rol is anders dan zijn rol in het verleden, maar het team is om hem heen en de organisatie lijkt sterk op die van twaalf maanden geleden. Er is niet zo veel verandering, maar ik denk dat dat positief is. Vanaf waar we nu zijn, moeten we als team sterker worden. Ik denk wel dat hij ons op de juiste manier leidt."

Ferrari staat momenteel tweede in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. Het team heeft een achterstand van 150 punten leiders Mercedes, terwijl Red Bull Racing een achterstand van 44 punten heeft.

Binotto is niet zozeer het probleem.
Wel het feit dat hij zowel Newey als Horner in 1 moet zijn. Dat breekt ze nu al maanden op en als je heel eerlijk bent lag je Binotto er wel op aanspreken dat hij niet zelf al direct heeft aangegeven dat die duo functie onmogelijk is.
Los van alle coureurfouten, motorproblemen en de aeroproblemen is dat misschien wel de grootste fout geweest. Kalm blijven, mensen aanstellen en de fouten herstellen is wel het allerminste wat je van dit topteam mag verwachten. Er zullen nog wel wat dagsuccessen komen de komende maanden maar het is natuurlijk Ferrari onwaardig en zeer triest om te zien. Men loopt daar collectief te klooien en helaas voor Binotto maken Seb en Charles er net zo’n potje van.

  Natuurlijk valt 2019 voor Ferrari bijzonder hard tegen.
  De pre-season testen in Spanje hebben hen, volgens mijn bescheiden mening, misleid en valse hoop geschonken. Al zijn ze uiteraard zelf oorzaak van de teleurstellende gevolgen.
  
  Het opzij schuiven van Maurizio Arrivabene én Kimi lijken alsnog een grotere impact te hebben gehad. Maar belangrijker is het ontwerp van de SF90H, gedurft misschien, maar vooral het concept mbt de voorvleugel zorgde voor enorm wat kopzorgen. Wat aan de ene kant werd aanzien als een revolutionair concept lijkt nu niet meer dan een vergiftigd geschenk.
  
  Wat ik vooral opmerk is dat Ferrari, bewust of niet, voor een wagen koos die specifiek sterk is op bepaalde circuits (de Powertracks), dit terwijl je als team toch zou moeten zorgen voor een wagen dat op elke baan performant is - ook al betekent dit dat je op bepaalde vlakken moet inboeten of consolideren. Het is alsof er bij de Scuderia niemand rekening hield met 'the bigger picture'.
  En daar ligt misschien meteen hét grootste pijnpunt, het gemis van een leider, of op z'n minst iemand met een duidelijke visie.
  
  Reden kan ook zijn dat met de veranderingen binnen de Scuderia en het lange 2018 seizoen waar nog best lang werd geloofd in het winnen van het WK, er tijdsnood ontstond. Een achterstand in de ontwikkeling van de 2019 wagen én zoals je aangeeft iemand die werd gepromveerd maar meteen ook 'meerdere petten' moest gaan opzetten.
  
  Ik geloof best dat Binotto de juiste man is voor een resurectie. Maar dan zullen, deels, bepaalde taken moeten herschikt worden over bestaande én nieuwe mensen.
  
  Het is een samenhangend (of onsamenhangend) geheel. Het valt allemaal wat tegen en de Duitse kopman heeft een discutabel teleurstellende 1ste seizoenshelft (een 5/10 gaf Seb zelf aan) en een C. Leclerc die ook wat, te vergeven, fouten maakte.
  
  Is de conclusie dat er teveel veranderingen op korte termijn werden doorgevoerd, het lijkt er op...
  
  Ik blijf erbij dat 2019 nu als basis moet gebruikt worden op succesvol te zijn in 2020. Dit jaar zal er hooguit nog een dagsucces of twee zijn...maar de titels kunnen al even geklasseerd worden als onhaalbaar. Helaas.
