Verstappen: "Powercircuits zijn met Honda niet zo pijnlijk voor Red Bull"

Max Verstappen ziet dat Honda zich goed ontwikkelt. De coureur van Red Bull Racing denkt dat zogenaamde 'powercircuits' niet meer zo pijnlijk zijn voor het team sinds de wissel naar Japanse krachtbronnen begin dit jaar.

Red Bull was in de afgelopen jaren consistent kritisch op voormalig motorleverancier Renault, omdat de krachtbron achter bleef bij de rivaliserende motoren van Ferrari en Mercedes sinds de start van het V6-tijdperk in 2014. Hoewel Verstappen beseft dat Honda nog niet de volledige achterstand op Mercedes en Ferrari heeft ingelopen, vindt hij dat de situatie een stuk rooskleuriger is dan een jaar geleden.

"Vorig jaar kwamen we duidelijk vermogen tekort en op deze kritieke circuits was het absoluut behoorlijk pijnlijk", vertelde Verstappen aan Autosport. "Dit jaar zitten we dichtbij Mercedes. Ferrari vliegt natuurlijk over de rechte stukken, maar ze hebben minder downforce. Ten opzichte van hen zien we er goed uit, maar soms hebben ze een klein voordeeltje, zoals op Silverstone."

Sinds de wissel naar Honda-motoren heeft Verstappen in Oostenrijk en Duitsland gewonnen en stond hij binnen twee tienden van de poletijd van Valtteri Bottas op Silverstone, een circuit waar vermogen van doorslaggevend belang is. Voorafgaand aan die race had Verstappen wat twijfels, maar de race liet volgens hem zien hoeveel progressie het team geboekt heeft met Honda.

Hoewel de aanstaande races op Spa en Monza het vermogensvoordeel van Ferrari lijken te benadrukken, is ook teambaas Christian Horner blij met de progressie. Hij heeft vertrouwen in meer positieve momenten in de nabije toekomst. "In Oostenrijk en Silverstone is vermogen belangrijk en we waren op beide circuits sterk. Op Hockenheim waren we competitief in de kwalificatie en de snelste auto in de race. We hebben op verscheidene circuits een goede stap voorwaarts kunnen maken."

Waar ze vooral de nadruk op leggen is de minieme achterstand in de kwalificatie, op zowel Silverstone, Spielberg en Hockenheim.
Dus dat ze veel hebben ingehaald van de achterstand is wel duidelijk.

  Ik snap de hosanna stemming sowieso niet helemaal. Een tombola en en race die je vorig jaar ook al won winnen is natuurlijk goed, maar niet meer. Ik ben echt benieuwd naar de komende 2 races waarna ik een beter oordeel heb over de stand van zaken.

  Silverstone is goed vergelijkbaar met Spa, beide circuits zijn power, maar ook downforce zeer belangrijk. Waar ze vorig seizoen op Silverstone nog kansloos waren, waren ze dit jaar toch behoorlijk competitief. Vandaar misschien die hosanna stemming?

  Het was idd de nieuwe voorvleugel, bargeboard en diffuser welke er voor zorgden dat ze veel meer downforce points kregen. Dan moet je vooral op de onderkant van de voorvleugel letten.
  
  Meer downforce zorgt ook een lagere topsnelheid en daarin komen ze nog iets te kort. Je ziet duidelijk dat Mercedes AMG en Red Bull in de middenmoot staat qua topsnelheid. Beide teams moeten het echt van de bochtensnelheid hebben.
  
  De update van Honda geeft hun net dat beetje extra snelheid. Hopenlijk zien we het verschil tussen Max en Albon omdat ze beide met een ander spec. rijden.

Het voordeel van de Honda tov de andere motor leveranciers is dat Honda mss niet de beste partymode heeft maar in de race de motor niet zover terug hoeft te schroeven. Waar Ferrari mss wel 40pk moet inleveren tijdens de race hoeft Honda dat niet. Mercedes kiest de gulden middenweg en is op beide vlakken goed. Hopenlijk brengt de nieuwe spec van Honda ze nog dichterbij...
