Kevin Magnussen: "De Formule 1 heeft meer straatraces nodig"

Niet Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen of Sebastian Vettel, maar Kevin Magnussen heeft het officiële record op het circuit in Singapore. De Deen wil dat de Formule 1 in de toekomst meer stratencircuits toevoegt, want dat ligt Haas-coureur wel. Momenteel heeft de kalender drie typische stadslocaties in Monaco, Baku en Marina Bay, evenals andere, meer open stratencircuits in Australië en Canada.

Stratencircuits zijn uitdagender

Met Hanoi dat in 2020 op de kalender staat en Miami dat aast op een plekje op kalender, doet de Formule 1 het er volgens de Haas-coureur goed aan om meer stratencircuits op de kalender te krijgen. "Ik houd persoonlijk van stratencircuits. Ik zou graag veel meer stratencircuits op de kalender zien. Ik denk dat ze ook spannender en uitdagender zijn, omdat de foutmarge kleiner is dan op circuits met uitloopstroken."

Volgens Magnussen is een stratencircuit over het algemeen veel spannender. Elke fout kan grote gevolgen hebben, zoals te zien was bij Max Verstappen in Monaco toen de Nederlander een goede kans maakte om de pole position te pakken en de race te winnen. De 21-jarige Red Bull-coureur crashte toen met zijn bolide in de muur. De Formule 1 heeft betere racebanen nodig, waaronder de Nordschleife, volgens Magnussen.

"Het is echt een meer fysieke uitdaging dan op normale circuits om een paar verschillende redenen", zo vertelde hij. "Eén, het is echt heel warm. Twee, je krijgt nooit echt rust omdat je constant aan het bepalen bent waar je rempunten zijn en aan de ideale lijn werkt. Het is erg lastig om dat te doen, omdat er niet veel rechte lijnen op de baan zijn."

Singapore veeleisend

De Formule 1 kent een tijdslimiet om zo te voorkomen dat de races te lang duren, Magnussen vindt dat juist wel een leuke uitdaging op een trager circuit. "Drie, omdat de gemiddelde snelheid van een ronde zo laag is, gaat de race meestal naar de tijdslimiet van twee uur. Het is fysiek de meest veeleisende race van het jaar, het is geestelijk vermoeiend. Je moet de hele tijd volledig gefocust zijn, misschien zelfs meer dan een normale race, omdat je constant in een bocht rond de ronde zit."

De beste finish van Magnussen in Singapore is twee keer 10e, maar hij behaalde het officiële ronderecord rond Marina Bay met een 1:41.905s vorig jaar.

  Inderdaad. Ik vind dat de F1 vooral op circuits thuishoort. Het racen op smalle stratencircuits tussen hoge hekken heeft niet echt mijn voorkeur.

Mij maakt het weinig uit, voor stratencircuits geldt imo hetzelfde als voor de normale circuits, het ene circuit is gaaf, het andere is niks..
Monaco evenals Melbourne (meer een semi stratencircuit) vind ik qua races niks..
Baku en Marina Bay zijn weer 2 van mijn favorieten

  Yep, maar Canada oogt meer als een normaal circuit dan een stratencircuit. Maar ik vind die baantjes bij de FE niet om aan te kijken.

Vanuit de standpunt van de coureurs kan ik het wel begrijpen, een (semi) stratencircuit is voor hen veel uitdagender. Misschien is circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans een optie? Dat is i.i.g. geen optocht circuit.

Tsja.... De foutmarge is dan wel kleiner op een stratencircuit dan op een normaal circuit, maar de inhaalmogelijkheden zijn vaak ook een stuk minder..... Al hebben we natuurlijk ook wel mooie en spannende races gezien op stratencircuits en juist hele saaie weer op normale circuits....
Een stuk of 5 stratencircuits vind ik over een heel seizoen wel voldoende.... Ondanks dat het vaak wel hele mooie beelden oplevert met skylines e.d.
