Ricciardo 'verrast' door bekendmaking aanblijven Grosjean

De aankondiging dat Romain Grosjean ook in 2020 bij Haas F1 mag blijven zag niet iedereen aankomen. Daniel Ricciardo was een van de coureurs die het nieuws toch wel enigszins onverwachts.

De prestaties van Haas F1 en Grosjean vallen dit seizoen behoorlijk tegen. De VF-19 is een snelle auto, maar kan niet goed met de banden overweg en vooral bij Grosjean vallen de prestaties tegen. De Fransman krijgt desondanks ook in 2020 de kans om zich te bewijzen bij het Amerikaanse team. De aankondiging daarvan kwam op donderdag en dat verraste Ricciardo wel een beetje.

"Een paar dagen geleden hoorde ik nog dat hij naar de Formule E zou gaan. Ik dacht dat hij de Formule 1 zou gaan verlaten, vooral omdat de afgelopen seizoenen op en neer gingen voor hem. Misschien was het tijd om iets anders te gaan zoeken. Ik was dus een beetje verrast, maar ook niet bijzonder verrast. Als je de kans hebt om in de F1 te blijven, dan is dat beter", vertelde de Australiër aan RMC Sport.

Grosjean keek ook naar andere klassen

Grosjean leek met Nico Hülkenberg te strijden met het zitje bij Haas F1, maar de Duitser zal zijn heil elders moeten zoeken. Grosjean gaf tegenover Auto Hebdo toe dat hij dat zelf ook overwoog, maar dat hij toch graag in de Formule 1 wilde blijven. "Ik heb sinds 2011 geen titel gewonnen en sinds 2013 heb ik geen auto gehad waarmee ik naar het podium kon."

"Soms voelt het alsof je aan het tennissen bent met een tafeltennisbatje. Ik dacht: 'wil ik nog wel doorgaan, terwijl het David tegen Goliath is?' Zou ik niet beter af zijn in een kleiner kampioenschap waar ik om de zege kan strijden. Het is belangrijk jezelf deze vragen te stellen. Het antwoord was echter: ik wil door in de Formule 1."

Ricciardo was (en ik quote) " een beetje verrast, maar ook niet bijzonder verrast".
Er zijn ook mensen die schrikken (mét of zonder hoedje) dus ik vind Ricciardo vanaf heden 'KOELBLOEDIG'!

  @rimmer, zo erg is het niet, heb inmiddels een heerlijke creme tegen brandwonden welke ik ieder uur uitgebreid moet inmasseren met lange beetje draaiende bewegingen, best aangenaam nog wel, met dank aan Romain

  Dan zijn er dus meer coureurs die het nieuws onverwachts.
  En dat snap ik niet zo, want eigenlijk iedereen verwacht wel, ja toch niet dan?

Dit is, in tegenstelling tot de reactie van Horner, een genuanceerd antwoord met respect naar de betreffende coureur en het team.

En zoals Ricciardo terecht opmerkt: het is logisch dat Grosjeannde kans om in de koningsklasse actief te blijven met beide handen aan grijpt, zeker bij een veelbelovende equipe als Haas.
