Wolff: "Max Verstappen waarschijnlijk onze enige tegenstander in Singapore"

Mercedes werkt met veel vertrouwen toe naar de kwalificatie en race in Singapore. Teambaas Toto Wolff vermoedt dat het team in de strijd om de zege alleen tegenstand gaat krijgen van Max Verstappen.

Op de vrijdag maakte Mercedes een goede indruk. Lewis Hamilton sloot de dag af als de snelste man. Daarbij had hij een marge van zo'n twee tienden van een seconde op Verstappen. De Red Bull Racing-coureur was tijdens de eerste vrije training nog de snelste geweest, terwijl Hamilton in die sessie niet verder kwam dan de derde tijd.

In de afgelopen jaren heeft Mercedes het niet altijd even makkelijk gehad in Singapore, ondanks dat het team in 2017 en 2018 de race op het Marina Bay Circuit won. Dit weekend lijkt het vertrouwen echter groot te zijn, zo liet Wolff doorschemeren tegenover Auto, Motor und Sport. "Ik denk dat Verstappen onze enige concurrent is dit weekend. Toch kunnen we Ferrari niet uitvlakken."

Ferrari sterk in derde training

Op basis van de derde vrije training lijkt die laatste zin de spijker op zijn kop te slaan. Hamilton moest tijdens de afsluitende training zijn meerdere erkennen in Charles Leclerc, terwijl Sebastian Vettel de derde tijd noteerde. Verstappen kwam echter niet verder dan de zesde positie, nadat hij zijn laatste snelle ronde geen tijdverbetering opleverde door een aantal foutjes in de derde sector.

Huh? Nu snap ik er ook niks meer van. Ik had wel verwacht dat hij nu ineens mindgames ging spelen en had gezegd: ´Ferrari oogt heel snel en het wordt moeilijk´.

Maar goed die eerste sector is heel snel hoor van Ferrari. Of waren het gloryruns? Daar komen we straks wel achter.

  Ik denk niet dat het gloryruns waren @ Royalere, de Ferrari is gewoon beter hier dan we verwacht hadden. Maar genoeg voor pole en overwinning is het volgens mij niet.

We zullen het allemaal wel zien , wellicht krijgen we na de kwalificatie een hele andere lijst te zien , alhoewel de 3e vrije training en kwalificatie vaak dicht bij elkaar zitten

  Met in acht te nemen dat max zijn Q3 tijd in 2018 op 1.36.336 lag valt met deze data niks te beginnen als... Ok Leclerc heeft z'n best gedaan in VT3.
  
  Max was ook veel sneller gisteren dus ik denk dat die de laatste ronde heeft laten gaan, daar leek het op onboard beelden wel heel erg op, ook kwa verkeer was het niet ideaal.
  
  We zullen het gaan zien.
