Horner: "Partymodus Mercedes lijkt door Ferrari nu meer op een theekransje"

Red Bull Racing is volgens teambaas Christian Horner niet de favoriet voor de pole position in Rusland. Ferrari heeft volgens hem de meeste kans daarop, terwijl het Oostenrijkse team 'in de buurt wil komen' van Mercedes.

Ferrari sloot zaterdagochtend de derde vrije training af op de posities 1 en 2. Red Bull Racing kwam met Max Verstappen niet verder dan de vijfde positie, hoewel de Nederlander geen getimede ronde afmaakte op de softs. De Nederlander spinde in zijn enige run op de zachtste bandencompound, waardoor zijn snelste tijd op de mediums bleef staan.

Hoewel Verstappen op de vrijdag de snelste man was, denkt Horner niet dat Red Bull de favoriet is voor pole position op het Sochi Autodrom. De Brit schuift de rol van favoriet voor de kwalificatie in de schoenen bij Ferrari. "Ik denk dat Ferrari de favoriet is voor de pole, maar hopelijk kunnen we in de buurt komen van Mercedes. Het ziet eruit alsof de verschillen erg klein zijn", vertelde Horner aan Sky Sports F1.

Horner heeft niet veel vrees voor de partymodus die Mercedes kan gebruiken in de kwalificatie, zeker niet nadat hij het voordeel van Ferrari gezien heeft in de afgelopen races. "Ik denk dat de partymodus van Mercedes nu meer lijkt op een theekransje in vergelijking met wat Ferrari heeft. Je kan ze niet afschrijven, zeker niet als je kijkt naar hoe ze dit jaar gepresteerd hebben, maar Ferrari is op dit moment absoluut het richtpunt."

Horner verwacht weinig schade bij Verstappen

Verstappen ging in zijn run op softs in bocht 2 kort van de baan en schoof daarna in een spin zachtjes tegen de bandenstapels. Volgens Horner valt de schade aan de RB15 mee. "Het was het zachtst mogelijke tikje, dus de monteurs zullen alle voorzorgsmaatregelen nemen die ze kunnen nemen. We gaan ernaar kijken."

Heel dat partymode hebben ze alle 3 wel ondertussen hoor. Maar ferrari heeft de meeste pk. dus dat gaat uiteraard iets sneller met de motor vol open. simpel.

Wat me wel opvalt is dat de klanten teams van Ferrari en Mercedes volgens mij wel gewoon genaaid worden met de motoren. die zie je nooit ineens veel sneller gaan.

  Opvallend is dat Alfa hier toch ook weer wat tegenvalt (zeker tov Haas) terwijl ook dat team met Shell fuel rijdt.

  Dat zag je in de afgelopen jaren ook met teams die een Mercedes motor hadden. Het zal allemaal wel mogen hoor. maar ze houden wat achter. Mag waarschijnlijk ook maar of het heel netjes is? ik had als fabrikant zijnde elke motor zo snel mogelijk willen zien gaan en mijn klantenteams tips gegeven hoe je hem optimaal kan gebruiken.

  Software matig @royalere, dat is wat niet verplicht moet worden geleverd door de motor fabrikant maar de keuze van het team is.

Horner, al was de partymode van MB soep met balletjes, het zegt dan ook genoeg over de mode 11 van de RB. Zou het handig zijn aan de journalisten te melden dat je het liefst met je eigen zaken bemoeit?
