De succesvolste Nederlandse Formule 1-coureur aller tijden is vandaag jarig. Max Verstappen mag vandaag 22 kaarsjes uitblazen.

Tweeëntwintig jaar geleden werd Verstappen geboren in het Belgische Hasselt als zoon van Sophie Kumpen en Jos Verstappen, die in die tijd zelf nog in de Formule 1 reed. Zoonlief bleek in de karts een begenadigd coureur te zijn en datzelfde talent kwam tot uiting toen hij in 2014 de overstap maakte naar de autosport. Verstappen ging meteen naar het Europees Formule 3, waar hij veel indruk maakte en derde werd in het kampioenschap.

Zijn prestaties in die klasse waren voldoende om Red Bull te overtuigen van zijn kunnen en na een halfjaar in de opleiding van de energiedrankjesmaker stond Verstappen begin 2015 al aan de start van zijn eerste Formule 1-race. Met zijn zeventien jaar werd hij de jongste debutant aller tijden in de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Na iets meer dan een jaar bij Scuderia Toro Rosso kreeg Verstappen tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje in 2016 de kans bij Red Bull Racing. Daar deed hij de wereld versteld staan door meteen zijn eerste race te winnen, waarmee hij ook de recordhouder voor jongste Grand Prix-winnaar in handen kreeg. In de jaren daarna volgden nog zes overwinningen, waaronder twee in de huidige jaargang.

De verjaardag van Verstappen is niet onopgemerkt voorbij gegaan bij de Formule 1 en Red Bull Racing. Zij plaatsten onderstaande video's ter ere van de 22ste verjaardag van de Nederlandse coureur, die momenteel de vierde positie bezet in het kampioenschap.

  @Meister uit een onderzoek is gebleken dat de meeste mannen pas na hun 45ste volwassen zijn. Dat is goed terug te zien in dit forum.
