Mattia Binotto: "Volgend jaar zelfde concept qua auto"

Ferrari zal volgend jaar met een evolutie gaan rijden van de huidige auto. Dat stelt teambaas Mattia Binotto na de Grand Prix van Rusland. In 2020 zal er geen nieuwe revolutionair ontwerp gemaakt worden door het Italiaanse team uit Maranello.

Ferrari begrijpt auto beter

In 2019 kende Ferrari een moeilijke start van het seizoen, maar dankzij de laatste aerodynamische en motorupgrades is de SF90 nu vaak sneller dan de Mercedes. Binotto legt uit hoe dit komt: "We hebben veel moeite gedaan om de zwakke punten van de auto te begrijpen.De ontwikkeling is constant geweest, we hebben niet alleen maar verbeteringen in Singapore aangebracht."

Ferrari stopt met ontwikkeling 2019

Doordat de titelstrijd is beslist heeft het team uit Maranello besloten om te stoppen met de ontwikkeling voor 2019. Alle focus is verlegd naar 2020 zo zegt Binotto: "Ik kan bevestigen dat we vanaf nu uitsluitend werken aan de wagen voor 2020. Onze focus is volledig op het volgende seizoen."

Concurrentie kopieert Ferrari

Hij ontkent dat het ontwerp voor 2020 aanzienlijk anders zal zijn dan de F1-wagen van 2019, ook al geloven sommigen dat het basisconcept te weinig weerstand biedt. "Ik denk dat meer mensen onze voorvleugel hebben gekopieerd dan wie dan ook. De auto van volgend jaar zal een evolutie zijn. Ik denk dat het goed is om een efficiënte auto te hebben in luchtweerstand. Ik denk niet dat het een verkeerd concept was. Er waren andere redenen waarom we dit seizoen niet hebben gedaan wat we hadden verwacht."

Wat in 2019 zeker goed zit in de auto is de motor en vooral het vermogen. Volgens Binotto is het echter de wagen zelf die het verschil maakt: "Ons voordeel is niet zo groot als je denkt. Er is goede snelheid, maar die komt ook van de auto."

  Mercedes is al heel vroeg begonnen met de auto voor 2020. Ze zullen ongetwijfeld weer een hele goede auto leveren.

Met de nieuwe reglementen in 2021 kan ik me ook niet voorstellen dat ook maar één team nog een revolutionair nieuw design gaat bouwen voor 2020.
Anderzijds vraag ik me af waarom Binotto zou zeggen dat de 2020 auto een evolutie zal zijn. Ik krijg dan juist argwaan, waarom zou je de concurrentie slimmer maken dan ze al zijn? Tevens vraag ik me af of de ontwikkeling voor dit jaar écht is stopgezet. Met nog 5 races op verschillende soorten circuits, kan ik me niet voorstellen dat er nog wat speciale areo-upgrades gebruikt gaan worden. Of die moeten al klaar liggen, dan snap ik zijn opmerking wel.
