Valtteri Bottas: "Mercedes kan redelijke stap zetten met upgrades in Japan"

Mercedes heeft een pakket met upgrades meegenomen naar de Grand Prix van Japan. Volgens Valtteri Bottas moet dat een 'redelijke stap' opleveren, maar is Ferrari nog wel de favoriet voor pole position.

Na de zomerstop heeft Mercedes het niet makkelijk gehad. Daar waar voor de zomerstop vrijwel alle races gewonnen werden, moest het na de vakantie toezien hoe Ferrari drie races op rij wist te winnen. Pas in Rusland zegevierden de Zilverpijlen weer. In de jacht op de zesde constructeurstitel op rij heeft Mercedes upgrades meegenomen naar Suzuka, waar dit weekend de zeventiende race van 2019 verreden wordt.

Bottas vertelde aan onder andere GPToday.net dat hij vertrouwen heeft in dat pakket. "We hebben dit weekend een redelijk solide pakket met upgrades. Morgen kunnen we natuurlijk pas kijken hoe het werkt, maar in theorie zou het ons meer snelheid moeten geven. Hoeveel het daadwerkelijk gaat zijn, zullen we gaan merken. We hebben wat ruwe getallen, maar qua upgradepakket zou dit een redelijke stap moeten worden."

Bottas verwacht gelijkwaardig Ferrari en Mercedes

Ferrari pakte tot nu toe alle pole positions na de zomerstop en pakte drie zeges, terwijl het in Rusland ook de snelheid leek te hebben om te kunnen winnen. Bottas verwacht in Japan dan ook geen makkelijke race voor Mercedes. "We hebben dit jaar een redelijk goede auto. Het is wederom een circuit met verschillende soorten bochten en lange rechte stukken, waar we duidelijk een nadeel hebben ten opzichte van Ferrari."

"Daar gaan zij tijd op ons pakken, maar er zijn ook een aantal secties met bochten waarvan we weten dat we er goed zijn. Hopelijk zijn we daar nog beter met ons nieuwe pakket, maar het is zo lastig om het te voorspellen. Het enige wat ik erover kan zeggen, is dat Ferrari waarschijnlijk weer erg sterk gaat zijn in de kwalificatie, maar in de race zal ons tempo denk ik redelijk gelijkwaardig zijn."

Volgens mij het enige team dat weinig laat horen over updates is RBR, ik vrees dat het dit weekend tegen gaat vallen.

Eigenlijk hoop ik dat het een flinke stap achteruit zal zijn en Max hierdoor meer kans maakt op de overwinning.

Zit niet echt mee bij RBR, ook Adrian Newey zit ermee. Merc. en Fer. staan niet stil, dus ook al is meer vermogen en betere benzine en kleine aero updates, maar in kwali ben je nu weer niet bij de top, dan moet weer alles mee zitten tijdens de race, aan MAX zal het niet liggen, hopelijk gaat het dit weekend maar vooral tijdens de race zo goed dat er een podium of meer inzit.
