Naoki Yamamoto verrast door 'geweldige' vermogen F1-motoren

Naoki Yamamoto mocht vanochtend zijn Formule 1-debuut maken bij Scuderia Toro Rosso. De Japanner was na afloop van de sessie vooral verrast over het vermogen van de STR14.

Yamamoto, die in 2018 kampioen werd in zowel de Super Formula als de Super GT, kreeg van Honda en Toro Rosso de kans om zich te bewijzen tijdens VT1 op Suzuka. Daarbij maakte hij absoluut geen verkeerde indruk. Hij nam de plaats in van Pierre Gasly en reed in de 90 minuten durende sessie liefst 30 ronden, waarmee hij de meest productieve coureur van de ochtend was.

Aan het einde van de sessie stond Yamamoto op de zeventiende positie in de uitslag, slechts een tiende langzamer dan Daniil Kvyat in de tweede Toro Rosso. Hij hield een goed gevoel over aan zijn kennismaking met de STR14, maar was wel verbaasd over het vermogen. "Het duurde even voor ik gewend was aan het vermogen. Het vermogen is echt geweldig en ik was erg verrast. Zoveel kracht heb ik nog nooit gevoeld."

"Dat is het grootste verschil tussen de Super Formula en de Formule 1. Ik heb wat dingen over de auto en de balans geleerd. Langzame bochten waren een beetje lastig, dus ik gaf zoveel mogelijk informatie aan het team. Dit is mijn thuisrace en het is erg leuk om naar Suzuka te komen, zelfs als het op vrijdag in VT1 is. Ik wil Franz, Toro Rosso en Honda heel erg bedanken."

Yamamoto onzeker over kans op zitje in 2020

Yamamoto weet niet of hij een kanshebber is op een stoeltje bij Toro Rosso voor het seizoen 2020. Desalniettemin bedankte de Japanner Helmut Marko voor de kans om in de STR14 te rijden. "Ik weet niet precies hoe hij over mij denkt, maar ik zou Helmut Marko heel graag willen bedanken. Hij gaf mij een geweldige kans."

  Hij is natuurlijk te oud om nog serieus een carrière in de F1 te maken.
  Als gebaar naar Honda en de Japanse fans is het wel heel mooi.
  Het is wel een serieus goede coureur die niet voor niets door Jenson bewierookt werd. Prima optreden. Marko zal tevreden zijn.

  Gewoon erin zetten, scoor je bij Honda ook dikke credits. Gasly en Kvyat als line-up is ook dodelijk saai. Toro Rosso was altijd het talententeam maar zowel Gasly als Kvyat zien we nooit weer terug bij het hoofdteam, daar zit ook weinig toekomst in. En te oud? Damon Hill was ook 32 bij zijn debuut. Yamamoto zou nog prima een jaar of 5 mee kunnen.

  Tuurlijk, hij zou in principe nog jaren meekunnen, maar laten we eerlijk zijn; hij heeft geen F1-ervaring.
  
  En het debuut van Damon Hill... dat is bijna 30 jaar geleden. Times are changing.

  Dat is zeker waar. Het is meer dat het voor mij wel lijkt of je sinds Verstappen niet meer ouder dan 22 moet zijn als je de F1 in komt anders ben je al passee.. :p

Zou me niks verbazen als deze Japanner de troef van Honda wordt om te beslissen langer in de F1 te blijven. Oftewel, Honda gaat door na 2020 onder voorwaarde dat Toro Rosso hem een stoeltje geeft en daarmee voor Honda een Japanner terug in de F1 is.
