Alfa Romeo neemt 'op korte termijn' besluit over line-up 2020

Alfa Romeo zal 'op korte termijn' een beslissing nemen over wie de teamgenoot van Kimi Raikkonen wordt in 2020. Dat vertelde teambaas Frederic Vasseur tijdens de persconferentie in Japan.

Raikkonen kwam na afloop van het seizoen 2018 terug bij Sauber, dat in 2019 door het leven gaat als Alfa Romeo. Hij kreeg Ferrari-junior Antonio Giovinazzi daar als teamgenoot. De wereldkampioen van 2007 heeft vooralsnog het gros van de punten van het team gesprokkeld, hoewel Giovinazzi in twee van de laatste drie races in de punten wist te eindigen.

Vasseur bevestigde dat hij vertrouwen heeft in de Italiaan, die ondanks de beschikbaarheid van Nico Hülkenberg de favoriet voor het zitje lijkt te zijn. "We zullen op korte termijn een besluit nemen. Maar als je kijkt naar de laatste races, dan doet Antonio het nu erg goed. Hij was in de laatste zes, zeven kwalificaties achter elkaar gelijkwaardig aan Kimi", vertelde Vasseur.

"In Sochi zat hij ervoor. De eerste ronde daar verliep voor ons niet goed, maar hij doet zijn werk en verbetert zich stap voor stap. Deze ochtend hadden we een probleem met de auto en was hij niet in staat om zijn snelheid te laten zien, maar hij verbetert zich en ik heb veel vertrouwen in Antonio."

Vasseur voegde eraan toe dat Raikkonen een waardevolle toevoeging aan het team is, dat halverwege het seizoen een lastige periode had waarin het een aantal races ver bij de punten vandaan bleef. "Hij is erg kalm en niet nerveus. Het is ook goed dat wij ons richten op het echte problemen en niet op ieder klein dingetje ingaan. We weten wat we in de laatste twee, drie races verkeerd deden en ik hoop dat we het kunnen corrigeren voor Suzuka en de volgende races."

Vasseur heeft enige tijd geleden toch ook al beweerd dat Hulkenberg niet in aanmerking komt . (ondanks dat ze goed met elkaar omgaan) denk trouwens dat Ferrari dat gewoon eist dat Giovinnazi blijft zitten...
