Max Verstappen: "Hoe minder we rijden, hoe beter het voor mij is"

Max Verstappen kijkt met een goed gevoel terug op de vrije trainingen in Japan. De Red Bull-coureur verwacht voordeel te hebben van het feit dat er zaterdag niet gereden wordt op Suzuka.

Vanwege tyfoon Hagibis besloot de Formule 1 op vrijdag dat het niet verantwoord was om de coureurs op zaterdag het asfalt op te sturen. De derde vrije training kwam daardoor te vervallen, terwijl de kwalificatie verplaatst is naar de zondagochtend. De coureurs kunnen dus minder rijden, maar volgens Verstappen kan dat juist in zijn voordeel uitpakken. Dat vertelde hij aan Ziggo Sport.

"Hoe minder dat we rijden, des te beter is dat voor mij. Je hebt minder tijd om te wennen aan het circuit en jezelf te verbeteren. Ik vind het niet erg dat we morgen niet rijden. Het is natuurlijk jammer voor de fans, maar persoonlijk vind ik het niet verkeerd. Ik heb mijn Playstation mee, dus dat komt wel goed."

Stap vooruit met nieuwe brandstof

Naast de updates voor het chassis van Red Bull Racing nam brandstofleverancier ExxonMobil een nieuwe variant van haar brandstof mee naar Japan. De verwachting was dat dit Verstappen en teamgenoot Alexander Albon tijdwinst zou gaan opleveren en Verstappen merkt dan ook verschil. "Ja, dat is absoluut een stap vooruit. Meer kracht en meer vermogen."

De starts waren eerder dit jaar een punt waar Verstappen en Red Bull Racing wat moeite mee hadden. De afgelopen races lijkt het beter te gaan en volgens de Nederlander is de software nu ook weer geoptimaliseerd na het krijgen van de nieuwe brandstof. "We hebben aan de software gewerkt, omdat we die nieuwe benzine hebben. We hebben een paar dingen geprobeerd en de laatste twee proefstarts gingen wel gewoon goed."

Laatste starts waren idd prima. Zeker als je nagaat wat voor geweld de Fer en Mer motoren in dat eerste rondje aan de dag kunnen leggen.

  De grotere teams met hun simulatoren hoeven ook minder tracktime. De kleinere teans zullen meer bslen. Al scheelt het ook maar 1 VT. Je moet alleen in de kwsli nu niet crashen
